Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Almost as good as Thursday Murder Club
Revisado: 12-30-24
I thought at first this would be a knock-off of the Thursday MurderClub series. It was not though. The characters were original and well-formed. The characters were better than the mystery itself, but overall, solid A. I would read another in this series.

Historia
This gripping fictional true crime podcast delves into the story of the enigmatic Dorian Gray, a vigilante who changed the world, rewriting history in the blood of her victims. Her targets were the titans of their era—billionaires, movie stars, politicians. Dorian said they had one thing in common: they had all committed crimes against women. They were rapists, abusers, master manipulators. Dorian left evidence of their heinous offenses with their bodies, and then she vanished without a trace.

Not a bad way to spend a few hours
Revisado: 06-22-24
This is.... fine. The acting was decent, especially given the material. Why they couldn't get a child to voice a supposed 6-year-old is odd, but nevertheless, it's good enough to accompany you while you do some dishes. The supernatural parts were kind of interesting except too many holes and not enough mystery. The tloose ends got wrapped up too easily and some of it came across as silly. Maybe an extra episode or 2 would have helped. Either way, not a classic, but if you are ok with some silly camp, intentional or not, this may be your bag.

Historia
A third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Amber Scorah had devoted her life to sounding God's warning of impending Armageddon. She volunteered to take the message to China, where the preaching she did was illegal and could result in her expulsion or worse. Here, she had some distance from her community for the first time. Immersion in a foreign language and culture - and a whole new way of thinking - turned her world upside down, and eventually led her to lose all that she had been sure was true.

Worth the read
Revisado: 01-10-23
The writing here is lovely and her story is compelling and well-told. The end feels too abrupt though and the characters around her are not as well fleshed out as some other books of this type. There's a few gaps but overall worth the read at a little faster speed. She is a slow narator.

I learned a lot. This would be a good read for anyone but particularly with challenging relatives with whom they disagree. People are complex. That comes through here.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Honest but Ableist
Revisado: 09-09-22
I wanted to love this, but the attitude towards people with disabilities is gross. First, no one says "handycapped" anymore, not even in 2017, and there would have been a way to tell that story without making that guy the butt of the joke. It was not punching up, I'll tell you that. I really enjoy her. She's very very funny and I appreciated her openness in this. But I just can't get behind a book whole-heartedly that is that intensely ableist.

The description does not do it justice. It is a fascinating, fun, and whimsical book that will make you want to continue the series. It's all the best parts of a Rowling style with a more modern take and fantastical world-building I have not seen in a long time. The audio version is spectacular. A++

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Dark, brilliant, and beautiful
Revisado: 12-30-16
Not only is the writing beautiful, but this amazing work brings up so many questions about the essence of one life. The relationships are beautifully constructed, the language is poetic, in the story propels itself forward nicely even though it is long. Warning though, this is hands-down one of the darkest books I've ever read.

Historia
Rose Baker seals men’s fates. With a few strokes of the keys that sit before her, she can send a person away for life in prison. A typist in a New York City Police Department precinct, Rose is like a high priestess. Confessions are her job. It is 1923, and while she may hear every detail about shootings, knifings, and murders, as soon as she leaves the interrogation room she is once again the weaker sex, best suited for filing and making coffee. This is a new era for women, and New York is a confusing place for Rose. Gone are the Victorian standards of what is acceptable. All around her women bob their hair, they smoke, they go to speakeasies.

Renews the Roaring 20's
Revisado: 10-15-13
Sometimes, thrillers that take place in the 20's can feel either tired or overworked. This, however, feels natural. The author brilliantly captures the essence of womanhood in this age, and keeps you guessing until the last page. I'm still questioning what is real and what is not after this fast paced tale, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
