Harry’s getting old and so is Michael Connelly. Time for Michael to retire Harry. I think Titus is even tired of narrating.

Description of Ukrainian life in that troubled time. Seems like there's not much Ukrainian history that hasn't been troubled.

Felt like passenger #6
Revisado: 11-27-23
Like the passengers, I stayed in the game, believing that the reader would be rewarded in the end. If the author's intent was to make his readers experience the misery of the passengers as well as the grossly insufficient hope of a decent reason to continue, then he hooked me. My brain felt abused by the time it ended.

Historia
In 1950s Dublin, Rosa Jacobs, a young history scholar, is found dead in her car. Renowned pathologist Dr. Quirke and DI St. John Strafford begin to investigate the death as a murder, but it’s the victim’s older sister Molly, an established journalist, who discovers a lead that could crack open the case. One of Rosa’s friends, it turns out, is from a powerful German family that arrived in Ireland under mysterious circumstances shortly after World War II. But as Quirke and Strafford close in, their personal lives may put the case—and everyone involved—in peril, including Quirke’s own daughter.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-11-23
Banville writes beautifully but on this one I think Banville wrote himself into a corner that would have made the conclusion far too predictable. Instead of saving the story with a much needed surprise twist, he contrived a disappointing denouement. It felt as though he had just gotten tired of trying to write a story that he'd never really gotten a good handle on.

Historia
Ian McEwan's Somerset Maugham Award-winning collection First Love, Last Rites brought him instant recognition as one of the most influential voices writing in England today. Taut, brooding, and densely atmospheric, these stories show us the ways in which murder can arise out of boredom, perversity can result from adolescent curiosity, and sheer evil might be the solution to unbearable loneliness.
