It’s an oddly uplifting book for a multiple murder mystery. The wry humor and strong characterizations elevate the story.

Historia
Julian Barnes' Man Booker Prize-shortlisted novel is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's extraordinary real-life fight for justice. Arthur and George grow up worlds and miles apart in late nineteenth-century Britain: Arthur in shabby-genteel Edinburgh; George in the vicarage of a small Staffordshire village. Arthur becomes a doctor, and then a writer; George a solicitor in Birmingham. Arthur is to become one of the most famous men of his age; George remains in hardworking obscurity.

Highly interesting snippet of history

This is a nice quick read that sheds some light on a rather interesting historical event and on the injustice of the British Legal system during Doyle's era.

Historia
Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes 'unstuck in time' after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

Historia
My Man Jeeves, first published in 1919, introduced the world to affable, indolent Bertie Wooster and his precise, capable valet, Jeeves. Some of the finest examples of humorous writing found in English literature are woven around the relationship between these two men of very different classes and temperaments. Where Bertie is impetuous and feeble, Jeeves is coolheaded and poised.

Coraline contains all the humor and magic that you come to expect from Neil Gaiman's work. It's a compact fun story. It is also different enough from the film that those who saw the movie first will enjoy the novel as well.

Historia
The Land of Mist is a novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1926. Although this is a Professor Challenger story, it centres more on his daughter Enid and her colleague. Heavily influenced by Doyle’s growing belief in Spiritualism after the death of his son, brother, and two nephews in World War I, the book focuses on Edward Malone’s at first professional, and later personal interest in Spiritualism.

Interesting view of Arthur Conan Doyle
Revisado: 11-11-18
The story might not be the most moving, but this book is worth a read simply because it sheds a light on one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's peculiarities: his obsession with mysticism. This book helps you get into his frame of mind and understand what he was thinking as he rejected materialism and his trademark rationality.

The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Excellent combination of tragic and comic.
Revisado: 11-11-18
This is an excellent book. The characters come across as very real, and the tone always hits the right levels of tragic and comedic. At times it may come across as a bit of a soap opera, but if it does so, it is one of the good ones.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

Absolutely fantastic absurdist horror comedy
Revisado: 03-28-15
Would you listen to John Dies at the End again? Why?
David Wong is an exceptional writer. He injects humor throughout the book and keeps the plot moving in wonderful and unexpected ways. For those who saw the movie, the book is considerably better (and I enjoyed the movie). The book adds considerable emotional depth to the characters and does such a great and serious job describing a violent event from high school that it almost seems out of place in this version of Clerks vs. Cthulu. The book has layers to it. It's got a wonderful juvenile sense of humor, but it also tackles some oddly serious subjects. Furthermore, it does a phenomenally subtle job of changing the past events of the book in accordance with the rules of the book's universe. Extremely well done.
Who was your favorite character and why?
John Cheese perfectly represents that one friend we all have from high school. That guy.
