Typically reliable story telling from CJ Box. I’ve listened to a lot of the Joe Picket books but not in order. At this point the reader’s lack of range is quite irritating. All his female characters sound the same. For the characters from the south it seems that the reader watched Gone With The Wind for inspiration. As a southerner his poor performance is like fingernails on the chalkboard. I really enjoy the Joe Picket books but I may just have to read them with my eyes.

Authoritative and immediate, this is the classic account of the most powerful of the American Indian tribes. T. R. Fehrenbach traces the Comanches' rise to power, from their prehistoric origins to their domination of the high plains for more than a century until their demise in the face of Anglo-American expansion.

Primitives, savages and unfortunate.
Revisado: 09-29-24
Primitive, savages, and unfortunate are the kinder descriptions of the native Americans. I tried to listen past the at first slightly disparaging descriptions of the Indians but could not push through it. Sadly it was a 2 for 1 and I can’t return it.

Historia
Julius Caesar is one of Shakespeare’s most compelling Roman plays. The plot against Caesar and the infamous assassination scene make for unforgettable listening. Brutus, the true protagonist of the play, is mesmerizing in his psychological state of anguish, forced to choose between the bonds of friendship and his desire for patriotic justice.

I don’t know why the first act didn’t download. It was free. Does anybody else see a resemblance between Orange Jesus and his unhinged followers and JC Julius Cesar? The story passed the time while I stained a deck.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

Disappointed. So much potential
Revisado: 08-21-20
It started off sooo good then something happened. The story telling slowed down and it became unlistenable. Heed the other advice of the other reviewers. Take a pass on this one. I was kin of angry about it but then I realized it was a free book. I only lost about 6 hours of my life before I quit the book. Maybe with different narrators the book would turn out better.

Eurocentric unapologetically racist.
Revisado: 10-04-19
Why didn’t any other reviewer mention how absurdly and subtly racist and bigoted Michener treated the Caribbean? I tried to finish the book. But finally at the end after the subtle way Michener once again denigrates Blacks and Africans I had to turn it off. And Jamaica? Dave chapelle doesn’t use the N word half as much. At least he’s funny and makes white people feel uneasy.
If you’re reading this for the history you can find better written and more entertaining historical fiction and nonfiction. Save a credit and take a hard pass on this bigotry.

A revelatory look into the life and work of Ernest Hemingway, considered in his time to be the greatest living American novelist and short story writer, winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Mary Dearborn's new biography gives the richest and most nuanced portrait to date of this complex, enigmatically unique American artist.

A burning pile of post modern feminist shite
Revisado: 09-11-18
Immediately after submitting this review I will be requesting my credit back. The performance is fine. The narrator’s voice is not annoying. Usually a good narrator can take a mediocre book and improve the experience. Unfortunately the greatest narrator ever could not polish this turd.
Dearborn offers very little new information on Hemingway. What she does is reinterpret what is out there in her man hating, revisionist filter. What she can’t find in actual facts she invents from Hemingway’s fiction as a psychoanalysis basis. For example, she discounts EH’s well documented PTSD by stating that he wasn’t wounded that badly, that he only spent a month in combat and that he was lazy when he returned to the states after the war. I’m not going to go on. Worst biography ever written. Hemingway was not a modern man. He was a man of his times.

It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions, and it was the appetites for foreign goods that drove economies and the growth of nations. From the first cities in Mesopotamia to the emergence of Greece and Rome to the depredations by the Mongols, the transmission of the Black Death, the struggles of the Great Game, and the fall of Communism - the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East.

Terrific start then it just dribbles to an end
Revisado: 08-26-18
First, the not so great. Narrator. While his voice isn’t annoying his inability to nail accents, especially Spanish pronunciations grated on me. Also, it seems that he didn’t know how to breathe and read at the same time. He runs out of breath near the end of sentences then sputters out a last word or phrase disjointedly.
The good. The story seems to be well researched but necessarily abbreviated. Genghis khan gets about as much space as Alexander the Great but not as much as Dick Cheney. I was expecting more of an Asian point of view and perhaps a lot more about China but it’s pretty much the west looking east.

John Charming isn't your average prince... He comes from a line of Charmings - an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chain mail and crossbows to Kevlar and shotguns, John Charming was one of the best-until a curse made him one of the abominations the Knights were sworn to hunt.

A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. The audio version really helped me get into this story because I could figure out the pronunciation of the names and places. I'd love to see this made into a movie or better yet an HBO type series. Quirky, delightful, and kept me listening.
