This short story "Emerald Towers" is fiction, but resounds with emotional truth, in describing the hearts of Brent Spiner and Gail Chord Schuler from 1990 to 2001. Gail, in 2000, had two biopsies for breast cancer, which, fortunately, came out negative. This experience inspired her to write this story. Other than the fact that she did not have breast cancer, this short story resounds with emotional truth.

Mort, like many teenagers, is gangly, unpromising, and struggling with a menial job - in his case, as Death's apprentice. He can barely handle his simple task of ushering souls out of Discworld, but he really screws up when he meets the beautiful Princess Keli, who is scheduled to be assassinated. Going against his boss's wishes, Mort kills Keli's assassin instead, which angers and interferes with Fate. But Mort's heroism seems to be for naught, since Discworld proceeds as though Keli had been killed.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.
