Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Loved the specificity of the setting. The characters are a bit archetypal but I got caught up in their story and the historical accuracy of the setting

Historia
This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

Fascinating, beautify researched and personal
Revisado: 02-23-25
I’m going to listen to it again bc there is so much to learn and practically apply. The author has a broad range of research, observation and personal experience to share. This is not a dry, exposition of cutting edge research. But I wish the author had used a professional narrator. Her voice lacks projection and energy and has a sing-song cadence that is lulling and boring, while the text is not.

Chinatown is the Holy Grail of 1970s cinema. Its twist ending is the most notorious in American film and its closing line of dialogue the most haunting. Here for the first time is the incredible true story of its making. In Sam Wasson's telling, it becomes the defining story of the most colorful characters in the most colorful period of Hollywood history. Here is Jack Nicholson at the height of his powers, as compelling a movie star as there has ever been, embarking on his great, doomed love affair with Anjelica Huston.

Didn’t want it to end. Brilliantly written and researched history of how this monumental iconic film came about. The interweaving of all these lauded artists, and the unknown, unsung (and severely underpaid)talent whose contribution was essential to the creation of the work, is revelatory

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Think and Grow Rich is the number-one inspirational and motivational classic for individuals who are interested in furthering their lives and reaching their goals by learning from important figures in history. The text read in this audiobook is the original 1937 edition written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie - and while it has often been reproduced, no updated version has ever been able to compete with the original.

Tedious narration and text
Revisado: 06-08-24
There are some incredible points made in this book but the text is so outdated, bound in social and technical knowledge 80 years behind the times, that it’s hard to not discount every idea in the book. And the narration is very flat and cadences repetitive. Thought the voice was AI, but a narrator is credited

Historia
Philip Carey, a sensitive orphan born with a clubfoot, finds himself in desperate need of passion and inspiration. He abandons his studies to travel, first to Heidelberg and then to Paris, where he nurses ambitions of becoming a great artist. Philip's youthful idealism erodes, however, as he comes face-to-face with his own mediocrity and lack of impact on the world. After returning to London to study medicine, he becomes wildly infatuated with Mildred, a vulgar, tawdry waitress, and begins a doomed love affair.

Dickensian
Revisado: 05-29-24
The narrator had quite a task before him with the sheer number of characters of both sexes. He portrayed the main female antagonist very skillfully but I felt there was too much similarity between the attitude of that character and some other female characters. The story is an Odyssey of self awakening that could have used some editing as Maugham repeated himself frequently and sometimes I had to fast forward through sections that repeatedly described his degradation and misuse at the hands of a main character. But on the whole very enjoyable and worthwhile

Historia
In 16th century France, Marguerite de Valois is growing up in one of Europe's most dysfunctional families - the Medici clan. Their extreme inbreeding has led to an alarming number of genetic defects in France's kings. Marguerite alone has escaped this curse. Uncharacteristically beautiful, intelligent, and sane, she is seen as a useful pawn by her mother, Catherine de Medici. In a scheme to unite the country during the raging religious wars, the queen decides to marry her Catholic daughter to Protestant Henri, Prince of Navarre, a charming libertine.

Marvelous storytelling that carries you along
Revisado: 05-17-24
The story is so compelling - and true(with a bit of theatrical license) and the author’s expression of the main character, taking her from young inexperienced naivete to a woman who knows more of her world than she ever wanted is so compelling. Masterful use of the diary form of storytelling. Characters very clearly delineated and they come alive - well worth spending several days with them. Fascinating history! The only characters voice I don’t like was the mothers - Italian accent didn’t sound very authentic - but a minor issue when compared with the beautiful mosaic of all the other characters
