Reasonably good story about the troubles and the people
affected by that conflict. I pretty much figured out who the
border fox was pretty early on. Someone aught to tell the author
not everyone hit by bullets gets "blown off their feet" like everyone
shot in this book seems to do. I enjoyed the narration.

Honestly, the narration really detracts from the book. Every time he hits an "s" it sounds like air leaving a balloon.

Terrible, But About The Same As Most Prepper Fic

So, let my start by saying this book is simply awful, like most prepper fiction. I'll start by detailing what's wrong with the book, then go on to talk about some of the ideas they set forth.

-Simplistic story
-Badly written
-Cardboard cutout characters that can't be told apart
-Uninspired narration
-If you have a doubt you can take a human life to defend yourself and those
with you then don't buy guns and ammo. Use it on other stuff that will be taken
from you by others. It's nice of you to supply everyone. Infra red drones, HAM
radios and all that won't mean anything if you're not willing to defend yourselves
and your loved ones.
-If you bug out and don't make it into "town" by day 3? Don't go. Your window has passed.
-If you are in transit and you are shot at from a long way off? Keep driving.
-If you are shot at from in close, lay down surpressive fire and assault through the ambush.
The collection of kunckleheads in this book early on use by my calculation 120 rounds of 5.56 and a
little less pistol ammo to deal with 1 guy.

Overall it's laughable, but then, One Second After is probably the only prep fic that's any good at all.

Typical Prep Fiction

It's eye roll cringe from the beginning. It hits all the typical points of prepper fiction.

The wife character is about the stupidest, most frustrating I've come across in my reading
and that is saying something.

They protagonist made it all the way to Baltimore from the mid west and then once he gets to Baltimore
what's his first stop? Scavenging. Not going to his house. Scavenging.

Don't waste your time with this book. I imagine the rest of the series isn't much better.

Lots Of Good Stuff......Minus.

There's a lot of good stuff regarding mindset in this book. I liked the life's mission statement bit and even made myself a mission essential task list for every day to support my life's mission statement. It's actually been a big help in holding myself accountable and maintaining focus.

The minus part would be the constant reminders of prison. Yes. We get it. The offer was in prison. The thing about credentials is that usually I only need to hear them once, not over and over and over again. Also I could do without the critizism of some training styles and exercises He seems to assume there is no ability to understand context on the part of the student or the teacher.

Overall, well worth the price despite a slightly distracting narration and the above mentioned faults.

The reason I say that is because the body of the book itself is a four to four and a half in content. It's not rocket science, but it is excellent information about how people process information and run it through a filter of fear. It also shows how to bore down to what you're actually scared OF.

Where it goes completely off the rails is a virulently anti gun screed at the end. For such an educated and clear thinking man, it was a shock to me how irrational his fear and hatred of firearms is. I could not completely finish this section of the book, because as a firearms advocate, NRA certified pistol instructor, and state certified license to carry instructor he was directly insulting me. His statements run from ignorant and misguided to outright bald face lies. It was actually chilling to hear him refer to the right to keep and bear arms, the second amendment, as a "SO-CALLED RIGHT".

It became clear exactly who Gavin DeBecker is; A member of the society's elite that think firearms are ok for the king and the kings men (Police, elected officials and their protective details) but not for the average everyday citizen. He is a liar, too in that he is not trying to destroy that right. He is actively doing just that. It was disappointing to me to see that he would see a tool for self defense taken from all the people he purports to want to help.
