Historia
The Aftermath of a stunning victory—especially an unexpected, complete, and final victory—should be high-fives all around, listening to politicians give boring congratulatory speeches, and a well-deserved rest for the Merry Band of Pirates. Yes, the galaxy is still a freakin' mess, but that is nothing new, and for a change, that can be someone else's problem. Until, you know, something really bad happens, and only the Pirates can deal with the problem... Or not.

Trust the Awesomeness
Revisado: 12-27-23
Most of us who are listening to this book are hooked on the goofy relationship between the elder AI Skippy and his monkey meat sack Joe.
So after what seemed to be a series ending book in Failure Mode (15), I was really excited to see that there is more to the story. So I'm in.
Let's see what happens with this new threat to intelligent life.
With regard to those who were disappointed in this particular book, I think that you have to appreciate that this is the first of what is a new installment in the story arc. So this book isn't going to solve all of the problems or answer all of the questions. Instead it sets us up for another roller coaster ride or two on what the future will hold for our favorite characters.

Get a grip
Revisado: 12-14-23
This series plays around with the well worn time travel butterfly effect. That gives the author a chance to explore how the future might be affected by changes in the past.
Clearly speculating on different timelines regarding the January 6th insurrection is fair game.
Politics in general is fair game.
For those for whom this hit too close to home, its fiction. It's supposed to be challenging. The fact that those who coined the term "snowflake" object when an author decides to play around with their world view seems to justify the effort.
This isn't high art, but it is fun story. I liked the characters. Hopefully we see some more adventures of these time travelers in the future.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Chicken Hill Masterpiece
Revisado: 08-28-23
I love the way James McBride tells stories. It feels like wandering around to start, but as the story unfolds the characters come to life and their connections blossom. It's those connections that power the story and provide context and reference. Ultimately, it is the story of life. We all struggle. We all face challenges. Choosing to continue to live your life is the humanity that we all share.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

More than a year after she helped save the world from the Sparnaxian invasion, Andrea Vernon is in a good place. Her boss is giving her greater responsibility and she’s getting to travel a lot (although her fill-in is hopeless at making coffee); things could be getting even more serious with her 8’ 4” superhero boyfriend, The Big Axe; and she has a really fun new BFF, Never More. Small issue, though, with that last item - Never More is a supervillain bent on world domination, and it looks as if nothing can stop her.

Skippy gets a dog
Revisado: 01-02-22
Another excellent addition to the series.
This one saves it's biggest bang for the last few minutes.
We learn a little more about some of the alien characters.
We get to play a little more in the sandbox of alien politics and the unanticipated consequences of upsetting the galactic balance of power.
We also get to peel back another layer of the onion with regard to what is really going on in the galaxy.
This particular installment is much more action oriented and less about the relationships between the characters.
All great fun, though, with a lot hanging fire until the next book due in June.

Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Great Book - Bad Stat
Revisado: 07-27-19
This was a great listen and a good story. It is also a timely bit of history given the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. John Houbolt deserves credit for his contributions and his persistence. It's nice that this book is able to shed some light on the bureaucracy that was part of the NASA creed and how one heretic was able to make a difference even though at a great personal cost.
My only gripe is that the author had Ernie Banks playing SS for the White Sox in 1961. In the spirit of setting history straight, the hall of fame shortstop playing for the Sox in 1961 was "Little Louie" Aparicio. The Sox won that game against the Washington Sentors 4-3. Louie went 2-3 with an RBI, :)
