Historia
From the best-selling author of Deacon King Kong (an Oprah Book Club pick) and The Color of Water comes the story of a young boy born a slave who joins John Brown’s antislavery crusade - and who must pass as a girl to survive. Henry Shackleford is a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1856 - a battleground between anti - and pro-slavery forces - when legendary abolitionist John Brown arrives. When an argument between Brown and Henry's master turns violent, Henry is forced to leave town.

Excellent Story!
Revisado: 07-11-24
Great fictionalized account of an actual historical event. I enjoyed James McBride’s creativity, humor (despite the subject matter), and wisdom spoken through the well developed characters.

Historia
On February 17, 2022, Brittney Griner arrived in Moscow ready to spend the WNBA offseason playing for the Russian women’s basketball team where she had been the centerpiece of previous championship seasons. Instead, a security checkpoint became her gateway to hell when she was arrested for mistakenly carrying under one gram of medically prescribed hash oil. Brittney’s world was violently upended in a crisis she has never spoken in detail about publicly—until now.

Inspiring
Revisado: 05-19-24
BG’s courage in telling her story was inspiring. Although many aspects of her story are unique to her (experiencing the horror of being detained in Russia), many themes in her story can be universal (feeling like an outsider, anxiety, being true to who you are). I applaud BG for being open and vulnerable in sharing her story and for continuing to bring awareness to those still being detained in other countries around the world.

Historia
Throughout her childhood, Safiya Sinclair’s father, a volatile reggae musician and a militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari, was obsessed with the ever-present threat of the corrupting evils of the Western world outside their home, and worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure. For him, a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience.

Although hearing Safyia Sinclair’s harrowing story broke my heart at times, I found it ultimately to be a wonderful story of strength, courage, and redemption. Her writing was lyrical and poetic. Highly recommend this memoir!

Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Does Not Live Up to the Hype
Revisado: 03-23-24
I don't understand the rave reviews for this book. To me, the characters were all either stereotypically written or had no depth. The story did not move me at all. Would have returned it for a credit if I could have. I wasn’t able to finish it.

Amazing!
Revisado: 01-11-23
This book was fantastic! Some of the stories (plus Amber Ruffin's hilarious side comments and observations) made me laugh out loud. The fact that we have to cover the pain of dealing with racism on a daily basis with humor is sad. But, I didn't find the book to be sad. Actually, I found that I could relate to the experiences of Lacey and Amber which made me feel seen and validated.
I am now a huge fan of Amber Ruffin! I will be listening to the next book soon!

Couldn’t Finish It
Revisado: 12-18-22
I found the southern accents to be too much. The characters didn’t have depth and the story lacked subtlety and nuance. The colorism was mentioned over and over.

Historia
This is the story of how a nerdy, homeschooled kid in the church choir named John Stephens became the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling, genre-pushing pop star we know as John Legend. For a long time, he led a double life—excelling as a star student while his home life was in shambles, working in corporate America as a financial consultant while moonlighting as a musician in nightclubs, always straddling a line between the person he was and the person he wanted to be. These are his Words + Music.
