A story of action, compelling characters, and a not-too-subtle reminder that dictators must be stopped.

I’ve just finished listening to “Render Harmless” by Marc Liebman.

Marc’s 2014 novel, set in the late 1960s/early 1970s is a fascinating and terrifying look at a resurgent Nazi terror faction and their efforts to form a Fourth Reich.

In today’s world, I cannot help but compare Putin to Hitler, and wonder how Europe might have been saved the enormous loss if those nations which later came together to win WWII had instead said “No” to Hitler’s annexation of Czechoslovakia and Austria.

I cannot help but think that we are witnessing a very similar unfolding in eastern Ukraine. The difference this time, of course, is that Ukraine has allies who provide weapons, ammunition, fuel, food, etc to the exceedingly brave Ukrainians who are standing up to Putin and saying “No. Not this time. We are going to take back all our land and make you wish you had not underestimated Ukraine.”

Well, that’s what I thought about after reading this book.

I really loved this story about a hard-as-nails police detective and his newly-met lady. Chasing a murderer and a ticking clock, Dennis and Sarah bring back memories of the tortured POWs I’ve met, with this rapid-pace story. I’m reminded of “Day of the Jackal.” I want to read (or listen, as I do) to more of these two characters. Naval Order Nationwide Book Club choice for September 2020. 5 stars, only because there is no choice for 6 stars.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” reminded me very much of my youth among the tide pools of California’s coast and Catalina Island. The setting, a coastal marsh of North Carolina, reminded me of many of Pat Conroy’s books, served with a side dish of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and a dessert of “Cannery Row.” Sea Fever, by John Masefield, poet laureate of England and survivor of the Gallipoli Campaign, has touched a string of my heart since I first learn the poem in the 9th grade, in Mr. Cunningham’s English class, and how it stayed with me all my years of weekends at sea, on sailboats and warships. So, yes, I liked it.

Would you listen to Robinson Crusoe again? Why?

No, once is enough.

Would you recommend Robinson Crusoe to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, it is a classic, and listening to it is a great way to enjoy this novel.

Any additional comments?

It turns out to be a novel in the genre of the survivalist, as was Robinson Crusoe. Faced with an unbelievably fitting cache of tools, seeds, and plants, the family with a father who knows everything that there is to agriculture, home building, animal husbandry, and with less ambition to be rescued that Gilligan, converts the island where they land to series of homes away from home. It is a story of homesteading, but one in which you have a Home Depot (the wrecked ship) with everything one might image one would need.

Overall, I'm glad I listened.
