A little posh, at first
Revisado: 04-15-21
It might seem as though the story is solely about trivial manners of servitude to an employer, and this might frustrate or offend an average reader. However, give it time to develop, and you will find that the narrator is, while truthful, unreliable in some ways. His life lesson and change is the focus of this story, and it’s moral can apply to a person of any wealth or profession. A pleasant read, overall, with an outstanding audiobook performance.

Historia
Matt has always been nothing but a clone - grown from a strip of old El Patron’s skin. Now, at age 14, he finds himself suddenly thrust into the position of ruling over his own country. The Land of Opium is the largest territory of the Dope Confederacy, which ranges on the map like an intestine from the ruins of San Diego to the ruins of Matamoros. But while Opium thrives, the rest of the world has been devastated by ecological disaster - and hidden in Opium is the cure.

Overall excellent
Revisado: 08-03-19
Esparza does an amazing job narrating. If you loved House of the Scorpion, this book will not disappoint. I read it immediately after the House of the Scorpion and it's an excellent sequel. Exciting, dramatic, with compelling elements of sci-fi and ecology. Readers are left with a feeling that the book was well-concluded, though the world is so fascinating and well-developed that we may all want more content about the inhabitants of their near-destroyed planet.

Great story and well read! Inspiring!
Revisado: 07-21-19
I'd say this book is appropriate for kids ages eight or nine and up, depending on their maturity. Some violence, some romance, but nothing too explicit. That said, as an adult, I really enjoyed this story a lot! I like to use the excuse of studying children's literature as a scholar, but I also am constantly searching for good children's literature that can be enjoyed by everyone, and that's exactly what this story is.
Furthermore, like Hale, I enjoyed the fairy tale, "The Goosegirl," as a child. It's literally my favourite fairy tale. Hale does the original tale so much justice and expands on its fantastic elements and improves the story tenfold. I'm impressed, well-pleased, and excited that this is the first of four books in the series. It is a stand-alone, self-contained story, if that's any concern, but I'm anxious to read more by Shannon Hale. Her writing style is refined and beautiful and the world is as enriching as it is captivating.
Lastly, as an audiobook, the cast is diverse and the narration is excellent. So easy to get into and become engulfed in the story. I believe I was stuck in a dark, cold, basement for the first five hours of the story, but I was too busy being drawn in by the performance of this audiobook to mind my glum surroundings.
