Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Sci fi bliss - unique setting
Revisado: 01-29-20
I almost stopped listening to this audiobook, and boy that would have been a mistake. It combines futuristic nano-technology complete with aliens, set in a post-apocalyptic America. Not your typical genre but as a sci-fi fan I felt it was a new twist, at least for me. I ended up loving the incorporation of nano-technology, which the author took in some unexpected and unique ways. She did some great world-building, leaving enough hints that has me wanting to learn more about what brought the world to this place and where it and the characters are going.

Extremely useful
Revisado: 09-20-16
This has been an extremely useful read/listen. The lectures start from the basics, and work their way through exactly how communication works. This is useful for anyone who wants to learn how to better communicate with others, be it their neighbor, spouse, co-worker, or that crazy Trump supporter down the street (well, maybe it won't work for the last one...).

Historia
Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

superbly executed horror
Revisado: 07-15-16
Any additional comments?
I've always heard great things about this book, and I can see why. King's ability to write horror, without sounding campy, is key. Not really a ground-breaking story, but superbly executed. The narrator also did a superb job, making me jump out of my seat with how emphatic he was at certain key moments. Well done!

Historia
Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky's acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress. As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer.

Great information - just too much of it!
Revisado: 06-14-16
This is a very in depth book on stress. You will leave it knowing the precise chemical and neurological responses caused by stress and their impacts on the body. Unfortunately, it was really too much information for me. I would recommend listening to an abridged version.

Historia
The first book in C.J.Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

Glad I stuck with it
Revisado: 05-20-16
I almost stopped reading this, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It starts off as a Sci first space adventure, but this is only setting up the real story. The real story is more of a drama about essentially a diplomat on an alien world, with a lot of internal monologs. This tends to really bog down the story at times, but after finishing the book I can see why the author did that. It helped to build the character, and really set the atmosphere and stage upon which the main character, and those he represents and negotiates with, quite well. This story is really more about relationships and drama than it is action or ships. And as I've hinted at, it really picks up at the end. So in many ways, the stage has been set, and I am intrigued as to where the story and characters go from here.

Historia
Centuries ago the human race fought its first great war against an alien race - and lost. A tiny population of human beings fled to distant Safehold. Centuries later their descendants have forgotten their history; for them, life has been an eternal Middle Ages, ruled by the Church of God Awaiting, whose secret purpose is to prevent the reemergence of industrial civilization. But not all of Safehold's founders were onboard with this plan. Those dissidents left behind their own secret legacies.

Revisado: 05-13-16
I'm still intrigued enough with the overall story, and the naval/infantry warfare history to continue this series. It isn't always the most exciting, and I feel some of the characters don't get enough attention, but I still really enjoyed it, and it's still absolutely fascinating to read and learn.

Hooked
Revisado: 12-19-15
This was my first Orson Scott Card book. And bottom line, I can't wait to read (or listen) to the next book in the series (and I mean that literally, as I've already started listening to the next one) . The voice acting was well done and very well cast, and certainly enhanced my enjoyment. However, it's the story, it's setting, and its many twists that I really found intriguing. I also appreciated the social commentary that seems to be present. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out as well.
