Why is it so important to cry?

I found the majority of the book very interesting, perhaps in part, because listening to the words read by the author seemed to give it more authenticity. Harry’s recall of the exchanges between himself and others (brother, father, friends) sounded genuine. But what bothered me was Harry’s obsessive concern with being unable to cry about his mother’s death. Is crying the only way to overcome grief? I don’t know as I am not a psychologist, but it just seemed like years of wasted time. And to be honest, I lost any sympathy when Harry used up the entire canister of laughing gas before his wife could have a single inhalation for her labor pain. Yep, lost my compassion card right there.

The story was about a woman in constant emotional turmoil and her waffling “love” for 2 men. It was exhausting.

This was a trite story of lost and found faith. Unoriginal cast of characters with a young, lonely widow and the handsome preacher who rekindles love and faith. Yawn.

Within Reach might be more aptly titled Within Minutes. Two strangers meet on a foggy beach and within minutes are practically soul mates. I gave up after the first couple of chapters because I couldn't tolerate the Reader nor the false spontaneous bonding that occurred between the main characters.

I couldn't finish this one as it was just too depressing. Hard to fathom how much violence, bad luck, and alcohol abuse one person can endure.

The story was okay, although predictable. But I almost stopped listening several times because of the narrator. George was written to be preoccupied with work and disinterested in his daughter. However, this narrator would spit out George's words with low menace, as if he hated her. The narrator also seemed to forget what voices she had adopted for Harriet and Frances because they were often interchangeable. Although Velma was written to be dim-witted, this narrator gave her the voice of a zombie. Overall, most annoying.

The premise of the "same time next year" romance is far-fetched, but romantic. At times, the story feels like it's plodding along, partly because each passing year includes a recitation of people and events that made headlines in the day. But it also keeps the reading rooting for the lovers, despite the frustration of their absurd relationship. Ending is satisfyingly sentimental.

The book follows 4 women during a period when each face a crisis in the relationship with their husband. The women and their husbands have distinctly different personalities excellently brought to life by one of the best narrator's in the business (in my opinion), Therese Plummer. Robyn Carr has a talent for drawing each character in great, colorful detail. But the story ends a bit too neatly for my taste - with each woman on her way to an even better relationship than before the crisis! I guess that's why we read romance - we want that happy ending and Robyn always delivers.

An interesting story, but I found it had too much repetition. Every time someone ran, their "arms were pumping." And how many times must the reader be reminded that Hazel was engaged to be married? Some facts or descriptions showed up again and again. Narrator was good, although voice was soft (almost a whisper) throughout most of it.

Ridiculous storyline with implausible characters. Inconsistencies drove me crazy. One woman dies because she sleeps with a man she just met, yet her twin is a worthy substitute although she is obviously more promiscuous. One minute, the main character will stop at nothing to get answers, the next she is glad her sister's body was cremated so the police can't investigate further. But what made me cringe was when the characters spoke like teachers in case the reader wasn't following along. How often do you hear someone say "In summary..." in a normal conversation?
