Great narration, disappointing ending
Revisado: 03-31-23
What happened at the end? I listened to it twice, but it fell pretty flat both times. Maybe there’s a chapter or two missing? Or… we’ll, I have to get the printed book to read more carefully.
Great narration, though.

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Interesting premise, too full of filler.
Revisado: 02-13-23
I enjoyed most of the book but it became more of the same, and then filled with events that didn’t really move the plot along. 3/4 of the book was good, then too repetitious.

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Wow. Charming as all get out.
Revisado: 01-27-23
J. K. Simmons did an exceptional job as narrator. The story of Ove seems ready made as a vehicle for Tom Hanks and Rolf Lassgard before him. Cantankerous and yet “his heart is too big,” literally and figuratively. A feel good book.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Amazing story, social commentary
Revisado: 01-11-23
I love this book for so many reasons. I can figure out the characters that correlate with those in the Dickens story. The colorful turn of phrase that peppers the story are so delightful and so southern, I was enchanted. As Dickens the social life of the Victorian poor folk, so did Kingsolver. Only she went further than I could ever imagine. I’m gonna have to get a paper copy of the book so I can read parts over and over and over.

Historia
In 1860 the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow family celebrated Christmas at Craigie House, their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The publication of Longfellow's classic Revolutionary War poem, "Paul Revere's Ride", was less than a month hence, and the country's grave political unrest weighed heavily on his mind. Yet with his beloved wife, Fanny, and their five adored children at his side, the delights of the season prevailed.

I enjoyed this book, but there were times when I felt there were too many side stories. I wanted more of Henry Longfellow’s story.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Heartfelt and relevant
Revisado: 10-18-21
I love Appalachia stories, and this one was great. Cassie Chambers pays homage to her family, went through the stages of life that may have moved her further away from the mountains, but she came back and she showed her real, genuine love for the people and the place. I admire her work with the destitute women, hearing the unfair laws in Kentucky was infuriating, but she did everything she could, and made a difference.
I recommend this audible book. The author also narrated, and her drawl sounded like she was both from the mountains and also the city. Loved it.
