Great Memoir
Revisado: 08-06-24
This was so good. Michael J. Fox, in his own words, his own voice, hits it out of the park with this book. He reveals a very personal, very difficult, time in his life (ending in 2020) and his views on getting through this with his fabulous family and friends. I relished every word and turn of phrase he used and highly recommend this book for anyone needing an uplifting message that isn't too preachy. Bless him and his family and his incredible friends.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

A Decent Book
Revisado: 03-09-24
This is an interesting book and brought out some cultural references that I wasn’t familiar with. So I did learn things from it. But I didn’t like how the author tried to weave in the past with the present. There are a few writers who flawlessly do this (Kate Morton, Kristin Hannah) but, unfortunately, I believe this author needs some practice doing this. It felt disjointed at times and heavy handed at other spots in the novel.
The story line is good, even if predictable, although it really isn’t about the “disappearance” of a girl from an island. It’s about child marriage and the bravery of a woman to seek a better life. Although, the irrational fear that drives all her decisions is a bit unbelievable, I did enjoy the book.

It was pretty good
Revisado: 01-23-23
This book was well written and had an interesting premise, but got bogged down in the middle chapters. I did finish it, but I was losing interest by the end. The ending redeemed it somewhat, but I still can’t wholeheartedly recommend this book. Too drawn out for me.

I really wouldn’t recommend
Revisado: 11-20-22
I’m writing this because I rely on reviews to decide how to spend my credits. I took a chance on this title even though there were a few less than stellar reviews. I should have passed on this. The characters were not likable and really did nothing intelligent. You have to listen to this as a work of fantasy, as suspension of belief is necessary to get through this title. I enjoyed another of this author’s books, but not this one. The narrator did a fine job, though. Save your credit.

It’s okay
Revisado: 09-17-22
This book’s only redeeming quality for me was the narrator. She was brilliant. The plot of the book was good, but written as if a middle schooler heard the eff word and used it in every sentence he ever said thereafter. The book’s characters were well developed, but really not very appealing or bright. The book was inundated with lots of drug use and alcohol abuse and strange references to ‘white privilege’. A navy seal, deployed so many times that there is nothing left of the person he was; riddled with PTSD and expected to be ‘normal’ within a day of becoming a civilian is told he has ‘white privilege’? I finished this title only because of the narrator.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

8 stars for Marcellus. One for each tentacle
Revisado: 09-01-22
I enjoyed this story and listened every available minute that I wasn’t at work. The main characters felt authentic and flawed, if a little over the top. The weaving of the two stories together was done well and felt natural. Overall, a great listen. Narrators did well. Yay for Marcellus.

Very fun, fast paced novel
Revisado: 08-25-22
I highly enjoyed the pace of this novel. Chasing across Paris looking for a lost book of sketches, two relative strangers learn about each other and themselves in this fast paced, well narrated novel. I enjoyed the theme of this book as well as the writing in this novel. The author really used flashbacks and descriptive language well to make the book cohesive and understandable for the reader. I hope to read more of the author in the future.

Almost ruined by narrator
Revisado: 05-24-22
This book is well thought out, if a little far fetched at times, but overall a standard "Puller" book. The downfall is the narrator. The male narrator reads Puller as if he's a 16 year old boy, with wrong emphasis and mood. The other characters are a bit better. The female narrator is quite good with her parts. Overall, it was the story that got me to the end of this book. Ignore the poor reading and you will eventually get there.

Love Simon Brett
Revisado: 11-16-21
This is the second in the series and I listened to the first hoping there would be a second. His new declutterer character is interesting and layered. The supporting cast is an eclectic mix that keeps my interest. The mystery was good and Mr. Brett does an excellent job of narrating his writing. I would highly recommend.

It’s okay
Revisado: 05-20-21
This short book is just okay. The protagonist is difficult to like and supporting characters are thinly developed. This is a mystery story of a twice widowed retiree living in what I see as a retirement RV park. A cranky neighbor ends up dead and our cranky protagonist, who sees ghosts, takes up investigating his death. This is short, so not a lot of time to develop the story or characters; therefore the book falls flat. There is a rush to the predictable ending.
Like I said, it’s okay.
