Not great
Revisado: 01-31-25
Story wasn’t too compelling and the added supernatural element in the last act felt rushed and didn’t fit. The narration was too emotional at times and overly dramatic. Would have done better as a nonfiction look at land exploitation.

Historia
An original novel by A.L. Kennedy featuring the Fourth Doctor, as played by Tom Baker in the BBC TV series. Something distinctly odd is going on in Arbroath. It could be to do with golfers being dragged down into the bunkers at the Fetch Brothers' Golf Spa Hotel, never to be seen again.

Best 4th Doctor Novel
Revisado: 10-04-24
By far the best 4th Doctor novel and possibly the best Doctor Who novel not based on an episode period. Tom Baker’s doctor is great, the villain is perfect for him, and his “companions” are fun and likable.
The only down sides are that Tom Baker doesn’t read it and there aren’t many sound effects, though there is music throughout. The narration is far above average.

More horror and very dark
Revisado: 06-25-24
Not what I was expecting. This one is very dark and turns into a solid horror tale during the last third of the book. Narration was excellent and captured the Third Doctor. I felt the story was lacking with some plot holes. The actual historical event of the killer smog the story is set in is fascinating and terrifying.
If you are looking for a darker, gorier Third Doctor adventure this is the one. While I didn’t care for this that much, it was still much better than Scales of Injustice.

Great title and concept…
Revisado: 06-18-24
…but poor execution. I love a good long book, especially a Doctor Who one like Harvest of Time (Third Doctor), Shada (Fourth Doctor), or Ice Wheel (Second Doctor), but this was too long. Too many moving pieces and it just didn’t flow. Ace and the Doctor spent too much time separated and not enough working together. The pseudo-noir element with the detective felt forced.
All in all, if you are a Seventh Doctor and Ace fan you may love this one, otherwise you might want to pass this one by. The voice talent was good but his American accent could use some work as well as his Black American accent or whatever he was going for with Mama.

Historia
Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once, embracing the Liberty ethos, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world’s troubles.

I can’t get into why I am so disappointed with this book without spoiling it. See below if interested.
******SPOILER ALERT*******
Basically Black No More meets Stepford Wives but not that good. The book is a serious slow burn and the end is too predictable, I saw it halfway through if not sooner. The main character was extremely annoying at times and she didn’t see what was happening until the very end. I fully agree with another reviewer who said the first 11 chapters could have been 4 chapters.
Just listen to Black No More, much better social commentary and funny as hell.

Excellent
Revisado: 05-30-24
So much better than The Scales of Injustice. The Master stole the show and I don’t even like him at all. The narrator really brought the Master to life. It is a long book but it kept me interested. The epilogue was a bit preachy and could have been better incorporated into the main story.
If you like the Third Doctor and his love/hate relationship with the Master, get this. If you like UNIT and the Brigadier, get this. If you like time travel and all of the various concepts and theories about it, get this.

Not purely Doctor Who
Revisado: 05-22-24
This is more two novels in one - a Doctor Who adventure and a spy/government conspiracy a la X Files thriller. The blending of the two does not go down well and there are too many characters and moving parts. Additionally, there is a lot of time that the Doctor is off screen. The violence level is pretty high and detailed. Think X-Files or Fringe more than Classic Who.
That said, Starkey brings the Third Doctor to life and his vocal ability is great.
If you like Doctor Who and want an action packed thriller with X-Files and Tom Clancy thrown in, this is your book. There is a huge continuity issue that could have been easily solved with a better plot but it is what it is.

An unabridged reading of the brand-new novel based on a storyline by Douglas Adams. The Doctor promised Romana the end of the universe, so she's less than impressed when what she gets is a cricket match. But then the award ceremony is interrupted by 11 figures in white uniforms and peaked skull helmets wielding bat-shaped weapons that fire lethal bolts of light into the screaming crowd. The Krikkitmen are back.

Insightful, zany, and only missing the voice of Tom Baker
Revisado: 05-21-24
Starkey does an amazing narration but he captures the third doctor best in his readings of Doctor Who. This book needed The Doctor to voice it himself. It also needed more K9 and some Jelly Babies… That said, the book is good with a crazy story that makes you think about everything from capitalism to genocide to Margaret Thatcher. You will never look at the game of Cricket the same way again…
This is an excellent addition in the Adams Doctor Who book collection of Shada, City of Death, and Pirate Planet.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 10-08-23
I was hoping for something focused on pastors wounded by the church. Instead the book is more an introduction to church hurt in general, focused on the congregation and larger congregations at that.
