Historia
For generations, the Slayer was supposed to be the chosen, the one girl in all the world with the power to stand against the vampires, demons, and forces of darkness. When Willow used the scythe to call up all the potential slayers at once, it changed everything. For years, the slayers have been working and fighting together as a team. Then the Darkness came, killing many slayers and trapping the rest in an alternate dimension. And Frankie Rosenberg, the world’s first Slayer-Witch, found herself fighting evil alone. Sort of.

Totally nailed the feel of Buffy found family
Revisado: 01-02-25
I found this whole series to be comforting, which might sound odd since there is decapitation, monsters, goo… But yeah, the whole Scooby gang feel of the original series is in these three books. I also really liked the voice actor, who does a perfect Spike impression.

A fast paced thriller with heart
Revisado: 06-03-24
I really love the characters, Michael and Gina, who were the leads in the story. The author did a really good job of making you like both of them right off the bat and characterizing them without spending too much time and slowing down the story. The plot was well put together, and the scenes were so well paced that you just couldn’t stop reading. Can’t wait to read the next one!

It’s a strange narrative but really engaging. Shirley Jackson made this weird, unreliable narrator so compelling that I was rooting for her, despite the fact that she is pretty terrifying as a person. A must read for those who love Gothic lit.

Historia
The town of Bishop is known for exactly two things: recurring windstorms and an endless field of sunflowers that stretches farther than the eye can see. And women—missing women. So when three more women disappear one stormy night, no one in Bishop is surprised. The case is closed and their daughters are left in their dusty shared house with the shattered pieces of their lives. Until the wind kicks up a terrible secret at their mothers’ much-delayed memorial. With secrets come lies, and each of the girls is forced to confront them.

Lyrical and creepy
Revisado: 04-06-24
I’ve always loved horror stories that have an unusual villain, and without giving any spoilers, this totally fits the bill. Lyrical language and great characterization. I especially enjoyed Bo’s point of view, as her voice was the most fierce and distinctive. There were some elements of the ending that were really unexpected, so that was a pleasant surprise, and I also appreciate that they touched on really important issues, like recovering from trauma.

Poetic and terrifying
Revisado: 03-30-24
I absolutely loved Melissa Albert’s OUR CROOKED HEARTS, and her newest novel did not disappoint. The main character is relatable, her anguish about her best friend’s disappearance compelling, and the descriptions of the supernatural elements of this book really terrifying. Such a great read.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

My favorite read of the year
Revisado: 02-26-24
I LOVED this book. It’s sort of like THE MARTIAN crossed with a touch of GRUMPY OLD MEN. Not that it’s a comedy, but the humor Millenium Harrison, the main character, brings to a serious story really sets this apart from others on the shelf. Loved the family drama, and the themes of self-sacrifice for the good of all really appealed to me. Meticulously researched, and the gravel-voiced guy reading this audiobook version did a great job. Highly recommend.

Historia
Cara is on the cusp of adventure. Unlike her best friends, she doesn’t want to go to college, she wants different kinds of challenges. And anyway, home just doesn’t fit anymore. She is growing distant from her friends and hasn’t spoken to her father in eons. To make matters worse, her ex-boyfriend and fellow climber, Nat, has popped back into town after breaking up with her over text. So it’s the perfect time to leave, and she has big plans for a gap year to rock-climb in Patagonia. But when Cara hears that her father is actually missing, things change.

Heartfelt story, love the climbing
Revisado: 02-26-24
I really enjoyed this layered narrative. The author managed to use flashbacks to 1941 really effectively, and I also loved the mystery element of the modern day timeline, as the main character attempted to find her eccentric rock climbing father who’d gone missing. I’m an amateur rock climber, and I was really impressed with the author’s breadth of knowledge, but also how she made the climbing terms clear and actually entertaining (I now really want a copy of Beck Frederick’s Guide to Speaking Dirtbag—too bad it’s a fictional construct). As a former teacher, this is great for high schoolers, but it’s clean enough for a seventh grader who has advanced reading skills. It’s also a great crossover novel for adults. Added bonus, it addresses the injustice of Japanese Internment camps in a really thoughtful way, so I could see this as a great classroom read in an American history class. Highly recommend.
