Another Side of Mosley

What a shock to read a truly pornographic but literary novel from my favorite novelist! That most of the women in the main character's life are traumatized sex-fiends of the kinkest order makes the plot preposterous and cost this book a star. It is quite a dark and wild ride, yet somehow it is sophisticated in its execution.

Slow and Boring

The monotonous, up-down phasing of the narrator match the slow, tedious story with a feudal feel. I am surprised of high ratings.

Worth Reading

I never warmed up to the main character, a geek's geek. Yet he often prevails in the countless battles and action sequences. The women characters were much more interesting, as was the main, ruthless, male villain. He is a complex, compelling fellow. They kept me reading all three volumes. The author is much to wordy when he narrates the thinking of the characters. Also the reader was among the best I've heard. Amazing!

Creative mix of science and transcendence

Tho flush with intense emotions and the complications of relationships, this story still manages to explore the fusion of human and machine in an engaging and somewhat spiritual way. Scarce development of the motives and minds of these hybridized "monsters" made this work a three rather than four-star short-story.

I have read and loved nearly all of Mosley's detective novels but this is pure formula. Nearly useless, which is a characters's name!

Ambitious Story

I had mixed feelings about this story until about half way thru, because I found the mad scientist's personality so toxic. The pastor was just the opposite, I found him to be complex and interesting. He was the reason I finished it, along with the detective. The mix of Christianity and middle-aged cyberpunk was intriguing, but a bit muddled at times. Still it is worth reading.

All the backstories slowed momentum.

The author had a noble agenda beyond writing a action story: he had some social commentary to share. I found it preachy and distracting sometimes. He is not as smooth as Walter Mosley in that regard. Still a gritty and worthwhile read. The fantastic reader was a big plus.

Ending was a an act of deceit

The usual entertaining formula, but Mosley choked at the end, leaving readers hanging unfairly. It felt like a failure of creativity or courage on his part.

I love trees, so it was delight to learn so much about them that I didn't know. The technical side of things at times bogged things down, but if you want to appreciate the thin line between the consciousness of plants and animals, read this.

Diamond-hard science fiction

If you love the science and could care less about interesting characters that are well developed, you will love this--if you can stand the juvenile, sarcastic main character who clones himself ad nauseam. The science was often intriguing, and that why I read it to the end. I won't read the rest of the series tho.
