If you love Sedaris, you’ll like this. It’s not as much fun as most of his books, but I enjoyed seeing where some of his material comes from

Jackson Brodie’s return as a PI is his 7th decade of life is delightful. This is a very smart, very literary mystery in the style of Agatha Christie, whose fans are likely to love Mr. Brodie and Detective Reggie Case, but really you should begin with the first book in the Jackson Brodie series, and proceed in order. Start with Case Histories.

None of the characters was well-developed enough for me to care about them. The theme of male domination over females (or attempted domination) in the 60s-70s US was very heavy-handed so that despite the truth of the matter, I was thoroughly bored by its treatment here. By the time the mysteries were solved, I was just glad it was finally over. If you want a great, entertaining mystery set in the woods that is magnificently written, read In the Woods by Tana French.

Bombshell eloquent book about the way colonialism and capitalism use language to attain their ends, and the people -in this case children—who are seduced and manipulated into helping them maintain power throughout the British empire in the 19th century.

I probably shouldn’t review this because I fell asleep and didn’t hear the end, but that’s indicative of my reaction to the book as a whole. It’s very clever but I didn’t care very much for any of the characters and I found the prose style just so-so. Also, the cleverness of it is sometimes too cute. If you are interested in a book that has murderers as the protagonists, and has a good dose of noir humor, read The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt. Now that’s a great book.

I love all the Slough House books. They are so much more than spy thrillers. Herron is a masterful writer in every sense of the word: his characterization, his plotting, his descriptions, his metaphors, his humor and deep understanding of human nature. I am going to be one sad puppy dog when the series ends.

Having myself written a murder mystery/memoir set in the Low Country, which happened to feature Randolph Murdaugh Sr. (“Handsome,”— everyone has more than one name)—I couldn’t help but be interested in this story. I followed “Murdaugh Murders,” Mandy’s podcast, from the beginning. I was one of those people frequently googling to find podcasts, Instagram posts, YouTube videos etc. when I found the first one. And it was definitely the best of its kind. But be advised, this book is as much a story of Mandy’s struggle against the system of corporate journalism and the corruption of the Good Ole’ Boy network as it is about the Murdaugh cases. For me it was a total binge listen because I loved those parts of the story and it helped to buffer the horror of some of the people and events she describes. I am so glad she made national news with her coverage and helped Murdaugh’s victims be heard and their concerns acted upon. Her work is an example of investigative journalism at its finest. .

Although The Last Confessions of Sylvia P is well-written in just about every way I can think of—excellent prose style, plotting and character development—I ultimately was disappointed by the fact that it does what it’s heroine decides not to do, which is to exploit the life of Plath and her work for personal gain. If you want to read a great book about Plath, read Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath, by Heather Clark. Aside from the above, for me the worst part of Kravetz’s book is the suggestion made innumerable times that it was Ted Hughes’ infidelity that ultimately led Plath to suicide. That may have played a part, but as The Red Comet makes clear, it was a lot more complicated than that.

I’m a literature PhD so maybe I’m biased but this book was phenomenal, and I don’t say that about a lot of books anymore, maybe because I’ve read so many.

Baby Catcher is a memoir by a midwife that spans her entire career, hitting the highlights of her adventures in catching babies (mothers deliver; attendants, or sometimes the mother, catch). Most chapters tell an individual birth story, most of which are in chronological order, with an occasional reflective chapter that might focus on an issue such as the decision to birth at home rather than hospital. Midwives, most of whom give women the best chance of having a successful unmediated birth, face many challenges and competition from OB’s who see challenges to their authority and pocketbook. In many states they are not allowed to legally attend a home north
