Obnoxious

Total

Revisado: 06-11-22

This was the most obnoxious of the great courses that I have ever taken.

The professor begins by telling you he's not going to tell you what to think, while simultaneously telling what to think every step along the way; and his grand conclusion is a so-called 'Christian agnosticism', which he thinks all Christians should adopt so as to not be homophobic, patriarchal, or exclusive - the worst evils for him apparently. And it is an evil which, for him, religious people are oh so prone to commit.

His view of Christianity is one that doesn't have unchanging Truth, or unchanging morals, but can always be suited to, and amenable to the times. What this professor is asking for is a religion that is just like we are, but professor, I have a question: if our religion is simply a reflection of our values, why in the world do we need it?

It is true that he reluctantly concedes every once in while that 'many theologians disapprove of this, or that' with regard to his more progressive views. But ultimately, religion for him, is just one more way to 'do good' in the world, and is just as valid as any other way of doing good - that is the true meaning behind his uninspiring 'Christian agnosticism' - it may as well be exchanged for that delightful new phrase 'secular religion'. And, I'm disappointed to say, that is the height of this unimaginative course.

Get Peter Kreft's philosophy of religion. It covers the important material, and in a better way, in about half the time. And while I don't agree with Peter on everything, he at least understands the religious impulse and it's significance: as something that cannot be reduced to merely 'doing good' in one way rather than another, but as an expression of the highest reality, and the best things of which human beings are capable.

Every day Isaac's words seem to be more and more confirmed: this book just came out, and already several things have happened which make this agenda more apparent. Get this book now to prepare yourself for what is on the horizon. Isaac is a wonderful writer and reader; it's amazing to see his abilities and knowledge grow from book to book. Get woke, then get someone you know woke too.

Including the audiable adds, this was like 5 adds for a 40 minute show... It just seems a bit much to me.

My favorite Ukemi recording. These essays are difficult to find. I hope they do the rest of the Moralia with this same narrator.

Dr. Robinson is the most intelligent professor I've encountered in the great courses series. He is very objective, understands complex topics deeply, and can convey them in a ways that are comprehensible in a short amount of time. The most complicated, and I would say most enjoyable of these topics, would have to be Thomas Reid's geometry of visables. He also introduces you to so much great literature for further reading, it is well worth your time and money.
