Undergraduate-level Analyses
Revisado: 05-26-23
Good attempt at applying critical and psychological analyses to FF, and video games in general, but the majority of these essays seemed typical of work done in response to prompts given in undergraduate literature or video game course. To their credit, they were clearly earnest and well-intentioned, demonstrating a true passion and appreciation for the games. But frustrating overall in their treatments of the topics at hand, including trauma, signification, and legacy.
A bright spot of the production for me was the narrator, however! Her bright interpretation and energy made the essays far more engaging than the material alone.

Fellside is a maximum security prison on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. It's not the kind of place you'd want to end up. But it's where Jess Moulson could be spending the rest of her life.

Excellent Performance, Average Story
Revisado: 10-08-19
First of all, Narrator Finty Williams turned in an absolutely incredible performance. It was nuanced, pitch-perfect, and gave life to each of the characters in this book.
M.R. Carey also accomplished some wonderfully descriptive writing and world-building, in both the natural and super-natural realms the book encompasses.
Unfortunately, all of those achievements were in service to a story was average at best. It was also predictable (I had sussed out the entirety of the books "twist" within the first hour or two), which would not have been bad if the book were half its length. Instead, by the time the illogical last few hours came to a close, it was as frustrating as chewing on gum hours after its flavor and texture have been exhausted.

Historia
One exceptional boy journeys into the ashes of society to find the cure for a devastating plague in this riveting post-apocalyptic stand-alone set in the same world as the USA Today best-selling The Girl With All the Gifts. Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy. The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world. To where the monsters lived.

Everything an audiobook should be!
Revisado: 06-23-17
The story itself was remarkable! And made even more so by the pitch perfect narration of Finty Williams.
Beyond the story, the writing was sublime, as well. Characters were fully realized individuals who reached beyond trope or stereotype and narrative passages were beautifully written and vocalized, with that rarity of form which, even in audiobook format, one wants to read over several times in sheer appreciation of the writing.
I would recommend this book without reservation to anyone I know (and judge them poorly if the claimed not to love it).

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Imaginative, but inconsistent
Revisado: 03-15-17
This book was very difficult for me to finish. While it had so many wonderfully imaginative ideas, concepts, and world-building elements, it was simply flat in the things that tie them all together. Namely, the characters were internally inconsistent - particularly the three primary characters; the dialogue throughout was juvenile and very often painful to listen to (through no fault of the narrators, who did an admirable job with the material they were given); and the narrative was overshadowed by forced plot developments at every turn.
I pushed through my dissatisfaction with the book due to the positive reviews it garnered, hoping it would get better. It did not, and I would not recommend this book unless you are happy to look past the glaring faults I listed; faults which are present in almost every character interaction and plot development within the book's 40+ hours of narrative.

Historia
The revised and updated edition of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's modern classic about the psychology of combat, hailed by the Washington Post as "an illuminating account of how soldiers learn to kill and how they live with the experiences of having killed". In World War II, only 15 to 20 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. In Korea, about 50 percent. In Vietnam, the figure rose to more than 90 percent. The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill.

Great until the very end.
Revisado: 11-10-16
The perspectives and information in the majority of this book were fascinating and creatively examined, and intricately supported with factual data and historical accounts. However, the last thirty minutes were generally mired in conjecture and unsubstantiated reports of data correlation which the author assembled in such a way as to suggest, and say outright, that the freedoms on which the United States were founded (particularly the first and second amendments) should be limited for the greater good, for the children, and because humans have no more ability than animals in overcoming "programming", whether through rational thought or moral character.
