Historia
This audiobook challenges several longstanding notions about the American way of war. It examines US military practice (strategic and operational) from the War of Independence to the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan to determine what patterns, if any, existed in the way Americans have used military force. Echevarria surveys all major US wars and most every small conflict in the country's military history.

Great way to get required reading done.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Actually I got this book for my son who is attending the War College. This was a required reading and he was having trouble getting though it.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
I listened to it as well and found it fascinating.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Nope..too long and too dense.
Any additional comments?
My son told me listening to it was much easier since the writing style was convoluted at times. Also told me he got "points" in class for correctly pronouncing some of the names that were mentioned in the book. We both thought the reader did an excellent job.

Historia
Years before J.J. Abrams' new Science Fiction TV series Revolution, or Newt Gingrich's prediction of a doomsday power outage, Raymond Jones wrote a spell-binding sci-fi novel with a similar theme. The world suddenly finds that, due to an unknown cause, all machines have stopped working. That means no electricity, no cars, no computers, none of the things the modern world has come to rely on. The story follows the population of a small college town as events unfold. Will scientists, using only primitive equipment be able to find the cause...and a solution? Will people band together and find a way to survive or will chaos ensue?

Got it anyway and...glad I did
Revisado: 01-01-15
Would you consider the audio edition of The Year When Stardust Fell to be better than the print version?
Yes. Jim Roberts is one of my favorite narrators and he did his usual excellent job. It's also better because I rarely have time to sit down and read. I listened to this, as I do almost all my non-work related reading during my daily commute.
What did you like best about this story?
"The never give up hope" plot, the characters. The twists and unexpected turns of the story.
Have you listened to any of Jim Roberts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes I have. I was a bit surprised to see the only review so far said his performance "sucked." However, based on his past performances, I got it anyway and I'm glad I did. I don't know where that reviewer was coming from but...this was a good read, and a good story. However, listeners have very different reactions to narrators so if you have not listened to Jim Roberts before then listen to the sample. Why people don't take a few minutes to do this and then write time-consuming nasty reviews is something I have never understood. I suspect those who do this are too young to have learned that you "kick the tires" first.
Any additional comments?
Like any sci-fi book you have to "suspend your disbelief" to enjoy. If you start nit-picking at the science then...why are you reading a science fiction book? Enjoy it for what it it...a very good "other possible future" sci fi story.

Historia
Both science and religion explore aspects of reality, providing "a basis for their mutual interaction as they present their different perspectives onto the one world of existent reality," Polkinghorne argues. In One World he develops his thesis through an examination of the nature of science, the nature of the physical world, the character of theology, and the modes of thought in science and theology. He identifies "points of interaction" and points of potential conflict between science and religion.

Excellent book - much food for thought

What did you love best about One World?
Very different perspective from the usual science bashing of religion written by someone who is both a scientist and a priest. Throughout the book he shows how the methodologies of science and of theology are actually not opposed to each other. He also suggests some ways the two disciplines can help each each other to understand this world and, perhaps, the next.
Which character – as performed by James Robert Killavey – was your favorite?
Non-fiction so no characters but the reader did an excellent job of elucidating some complex ideas. Made them a lot easier to understand than just staring at the print.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No....deep stuff here...needs to be taken in small doses.
Any additional comments?
I wish I could get my son to listen to this. He's always "throwing" science at me when we discuss religion. Can't seem to understand that, years from now, some of what we take as "hard science" may be found to be completely in error.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Historia
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote many wonderful romantic and realistic short stories and a few incredible "on the edge" fantasy and supernatural stories. Although the story of "Benjamin Button" is quite different than the 2009 movie, the premise is the same - a man is born old and lives his life backwards! Fizgerald says he got the idea from Mark Twain's remark that it was a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end.

Great story
Revisado: 04-01-09
A got this story after watching the movie and, not surprisingly, found that the movie used the basic concept and that's about all. That being said, it was a great story - what an imagination Fitzgerald had! Reading was good, too. Loved the voices of Button at various ages.
