Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Zero accountability
Revisado: 04-06-25
There are certain aspects where the authors deserves zero blame (won’t name them so as to prevent spoiling). But on the whole the author takes essentially zero accountability for her role in a senior leadership position in a company she swears to be evil throughout. In general this is just a book written with the benefit of hindsight and wanting to distance herself from the company she had a rather large part in shaping.
I don’t doubt what she says as much as I doubt that she was simultaneously close enough to all of this to write an entire book while also being 0% accountable. At a few points in the book she “regrets her role” but that’s about all you’ll get. Was expecting some mea culpa apology at the end but nada. Just more patting herself on the back.
The inside stories are interesting enough to get me to the finish line, but this was a really bad book in general. Would not recommend at all sadly.

Historia
As the novel opens, Artemio Cruz, the all-powerful newspaper magnate and land baron, lies confined to his bed and, in dreamlike flashes, recalls the pivotal episodes of his life. Carlos Fuentes manipulates the ensuing kaleidoscope of images with dazzling inventiveness, layering memory upon memory, from Cruz’s heroic campaigns during the Mexican Revolution, through his relentless climb from poverty to wealth, to his uneasy death. Perhaps Fuentes’ masterpiece, The Death of Artemio Cruz is a haunting voyage into the soul of modern Mexico.

Incredible
Revisado: 02-21-25
Really incredible. Fragmented narratives like this can be difficult for me on audiobooks, but if you pull up a little cheat sheet of which chapter is when it flows really well. There’s a reason this book is a classic.
Also the performance is one of the better I’ve heard. Emotions are conveyed well by the reader but without ever going over the top or getting cartoonish which I’ve noticed can be a problem in fiction audiobooks.
Hats off to the narrator who made this incredible work come to life

Historia
Around 950,000 years ago, a family of five walked along the beach and left behind the oldest family footprints ever discovered. For award-winning historian Simon Sebag Montefiore, these poignant, familiar fossils serve as an inspiration for a new kind of world history, one that is genuinely global, spans all eras and all continents, and focuses on the family ties that connect every one of us. In this epic, ever-surprising book, Montefiore chronicles the world’s great dynasties across human history to the people at the heart of the human drama.

The pace is incredible
Revisado: 01-16-25
The negative reviews of this book have me really confused. It’s a world history, of course it’s not going to cover EVERYTHING, and there will be some randomness to it — but this book is paced really well, and is insanely informational.
Montefiore is incredible, this book is incredible, and the idea of writing the book through the lens of “Family” is a genius one.

Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today’s clash of civilizations. From King David to Barack Obama, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of three thousand years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism and coexistence. This is how Jerusalem became Jerusalem, and the only city that exists twice - in heaven and on earth.

Incredible.
Revisado: 11-01-24
It’s a lengthy book that I finished in record time. An absolute page turner. You can almost feel the history as you go from chapter to chapter, era to era.
Does a fantastic job painting the picture of Jerusalem. As an American, it’s nearly impossibly to grasp the historical scope of Jerusalem, and this book tackles the impossible task with aplomb!
The only “complaint” I have is it has me yearning for another trip to Jerusalem!
Can’t recommend enough.

Historia
On the morning of Saturday, October 7, Amir Tibon and his wife were awakened by mortar rounds exploding near their home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a progressive Israeli settlement along the Gaza border. Soon, they were holding their two young daughters in the family’s reinforced safe room, urging their children not to cry while they listened to the gunfire from Hamas attackers outside their windows. With his cell phone battery running low, Amir texted his father: “They’re here.”

Truly incredible
Revisado: 09-28-24
I had the good fortune of meeting Amir in Nahal Oz in the summer of 2023 with an IPF delegation. He was a welcoming host, and it was one of the highlights of the trip.
This book was at different times: inspiring, heart breaking, eye opening, informational. The entire time it was well written and beautiful. Amir’s passion for his family and his kibbutz can be felt through the page. I consider myself so fortunate to have met Amir.
This is a must read for anyone who wants to not just hear his family’s improbable story of survival, but wants to better understand the Gaza Envelope.
Books like these make me wish I could give greater than 5 stars!

Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture - and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly anti-Semitic attacks - Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: She was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones.

Easily the best book I’ve read this year. Just phenomenally written in every single way. Outside of the beautiful writing was struck by how much I learned from this book. Excellent and would recommend to anyone, and should be mandatory reading in college

Historia
Chicago is a world-class city, but it is also a city in crisis. Crime is up, schools have repeatedly shut down due to conflict between City Hall and the powerful teachers' union, and COVID-19 only deepened the entrenched poverty, institutional racism, and endless tug of war between the city's haves and have nots. For four years, the person at the center of this storm was Lori Lightfoot.

One of the best books on Chi politics
Revisado: 04-04-24
This is the best accounting of Chicago politics 2016-2023 that we’ll likely ever get. Pratt deserves all the credit in the world for keeping the pace of the book moving without skipping over major events.
The one quibble I have is the lack of detail on Lori’s upbringing and early life which Pratt skips over, yet spends considerable time on her term in the obscure OPS. It is one of the instances where Pratt’s bias is revealed - but mostly he does a great job.
With that small complaint out of the way I’ll reiterate that this book is living proof why local journalism is so crucial to cities well-being. Only an experienced, talented, and plugged in reporter like Pratt could deliver something like this and if the city had 5 more Gregory Pratt’s in our media landscape we’d be better served for it. Easy 5 stars and anyone tangentially related in city politics (or how government works) needs to listen to this.

Historia
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

Doesn’t go in depth enough
Revisado: 04-03-24
Like most of Woodward’s books it’s well written and the access is incredible but sadly it seems like he used the same few sources over and over. To me it’s pretty obvious the bulk of “deep background” came from a few people.
I also expected the book to be a bit more focused on the actual events of January 6th, and was a bit surprised to find how quickly that portion of the book wrapped up. General Milley also disappears entirely from the book (until the very end) and I thought he deserved much more focus.
However, hearing about Biden’s talks with Manchin and Schumer’s expert behind-the-scenes maneuvering was quite interesting.
It bounces around a lot, not uncommon for the author, but ultimately I enjoyed it and feel smarter for reading it. Ultimately, I think it misses a chance to dive in more on January 6th - a 1 of 1 historic event.

It reveals stunning details of life-and-death decision-making, top-secret military operations and high level peace negotiations. The Prime Ministers brings listeners into the orbits of world figures, including Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana and the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Yehuda is a great writer - that much is evident. His ability to remember small details is immaculate and, obviously, his story allows him windows into truly important moments in Middle East history.
Despite being full of historical fact, the book is anything but dry and keeps up a great pace. Would highly recommend!

The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin remains the single most consequential event in Israel's recent history and one that fundamentally altered the trajectory for both Israel and the Palestinians. Killing a King relates the parallel stories of Rabin and his stalker, Yigal Amir, over the two years leading up to the assassination, as one of them planned political deals he hoped would lead to peace - and the other plotted murder.
