the established world building and character development from book one carry over so well in this book. the pacing of this book is faster and the insight to the main character and those around her are developed more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am now readily diving into book 3.

riveting story, subpar narration

this book is a fabulous fantasy read. hands down probably my favorite read of 2023. going to be hard to top this one. I have a few nit picky things but they are more isms for me and what I like. they didn't take away too much from the story.
as long as I wasn't focused on the narration (ie doing chores or yard work) I could get past the sound of the narrator's voice. apparently from the other reviews she was sick. whatever. we all have to work so I wasn't bothered by that as much. but did take away stars for it.

it was good but I was disappointed.

i had high hopes for book two in this series. I don't normally leave reviews but I was so disappointed for the first 3/4th of this book.
the punt of times the author told me "those emerald eyes..." ma'am...I got it after the first hundred times.
also the mc was absolutely the most whiney mc ever. it took 25 chapters for me to actually like her and find her growth rewarding.
Overall I enjoyed the story. I just was super annoyed with the amount of times the word emerald came up and how utterly annoying and unlikable the mc was.

I started this book as my introduction to audio books. I've never been an audio book type person, I like having the book in hand. but I was listening to a lecture from Brandon Sanderson on youtube where he talked about world building and I grew intrigued. I finished this story in three days. three. days.
I had a theory about who the big bad was, but I was only partly right and I was pleasantly surprised with the reveal. Brandon Sanderson is a master with words and story and I was riveted by this story.
The voice actor was fantastic as well. overall best first experience with audio books.
