Historia
From the American Revolution through the Civil Rights movement, Americans have long mobilized against political, social, and economic privilege. Hierarchies based on inheritance, wealth, and political preferment were treated as obnoxious and a threat to democracy. Mass movements envisioned a new world supplanting dog-eat-dog capitalism. But over the last half-century that political will and cultural imagination have vanished. Why? The Age of Acquiescence seeks to solve that mystery.

Interesting history
Revisado: 03-03-15
This is a history book about how we came to accept inequality. The whole story, mostly in the 19th and 20th centuries, leading up to now. Very studied and interesting, and not a light read. Good narration, very steady. The middle class is doomed again!

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Was most impressed by the narration and use of dialect among muliple readers. Interesting twists with fascinating pacing and attention to details.

Bold and fun adventure!
Revisado: 02-06-15
Picking a veteran Hollywood screen and Star Wars voiceover actor for this was genius. The word "delicious" comes to mind. Tabori has the perfect vehicle here for his gifts at spontaneous character voices. A mega lotto winner twerp disappears, then hires a washed up travel writer to buy an island for him, his intention to aid the natives of a neighboring island in their fight against a corrupt governor. The writer will get a million bucks tax free, and the Powerball winner will get to be famous forever as a hero, with a hilarious To Do list. Or will they? This is an audio movie possessing wit, charm and intrigue in spades.

Historia
The four of them had only two things in common - their name and a love for the ladies. John Boce was a no-account accountant who lusted after food, drink, cars, and women. John Thompson was a secretive librarian who liked his books and his women well-stacked. John Viviano was a fashion photographer with a great feel for a body - any body! And John Pilgrim was a poetic bum who had the girls hanging on his every stanza. All of them wanted the same woman, but which one wanted her enough to kill?

Well written but undramatic
Revisado: 02-05-15
For suspense elements by today's standards this older mystery was only moderately entertaining, although I did enjoy the nuanced reading. Listeners are likely to have very different reactions, from one to five stars, given that this is more of a cosy involving eccentric characters (or womanizers) all after the same woman, and an old woman's getting pushed down the stairs to uncover the killer.

That's what one character describes the ploy to fool a rich criminal hiding out in Dubai. This novel is a unique blend of suspense and romance, revenge and discovery. The first half is set in Dubai, on the trail of the person behind a drone attack on the world's tallest building. Architecture and astronomy highlight the intrique. The second half is set in Tucson, told from a female reporter's point of view as she searches for the man whose story is told in the first half. Both are transformed by what happens next. Cross genre, unexpected, different, powerful. Eckhart Tolle, Nora Roberts, and John le Carre combined.

Buy the ticket, take the ride.
Revisado: 01-25-15
If you could sum up The Methuselah Gene in three words, what would they be?
Original, insightful, fun.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
In places. Everything doesn't have to be James Patterson, does it? This is more than mindless entertainment.
Have you listened to any of Tim Lundeen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. He does keep a steady hand on the wheel. Destination surprise.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Silly question. It made me think. Think goosebumps, not Jerry Springer.
Any additional comments?
Cool blend of pharmaceutical science, mystery, and romance. Not just for geeks. Lundeen never over-indulges. Includes a climax on a cruise ship. If you're looking for something different, this is it.

Christian Suspense with wild weather!
Revisado: 01-24-15
Tornados and hurricanes are called "acts of God," and here play part of the plot. Whitener is always spot on, complimented by some mood enhancing sound effects. He's really good at delivering the anguish and longing of a young man tormented by nightmares of a preacher turned prosperity gospel TV greedy. The lady psychologist treating him sees a way to solve her own problem with her son and her ex, and Whitener is able to pull off her character's voice and dilemma too with authentic emotion. Lots of coffee to stay awake for an ending that's worth the wild ride.

This won an Earphones award so I was expecting a good reading, and it was. Very much like the news, with shootings and a serial bomber no one suspects until the end. Recommend highly.

Hollywood related mysteries with twists
Revisado: 01-23-15
Where does Oscar's Hijack rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Liked the unusual hybrid aspect of linking four stories with a fifth.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The truck driver sounded unimpressed by his hijacker, which was funny
What does Barrett Whitener bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Just so natural and comitted to becoming the characters, he's totally into setting the authors respective tones. Sound effects aren't intrusive and increase the effect. Nicely done.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The satire at the end was unexpected, but that's like the Oscar show itself, so it fit, and the twist was original so that's a great contrast to the more serious and chilling stories used to entertain the trucker and hijacker along the way.
Any additional comments?
Well balanced, it takes risks and pulls it off in spades in my opinion.
