Where to start....

I put this book down.

I love books and I typically finish all books. Both the ones that feel like you're being treated to a gourmet meal and ones that feel like you decided to eat junkfood.

This book is like you went to eat at a mid-grade restaurant and they swapped out random aspects of the meal. Wanted a drink? You got yogurt. Wanted a piece of chicken? It's tofurky. It's like going to take a bite of something sweet and finding out it's savory. Not the shock you wanted. And while pizza and ice cream are great. I don't want ice cream that tastes like pizza.

This book is pervaded by 'themes'. "All good stories have themes!" Yes. But this book waterboards you with these themes. Veganism is great. I'm all for veganism. But I don't like being waterboarded with the concept. I would have preferred the delivery of thoughts/ideas to be once or subtly executed. I love the fantasy genre, but I hate when the author (I assume unintentionally) overly pushes a thought or idea.

The good, the not so good, and the indifferent.

The good:
- I think the premise is there

The not so good:
- something about the execution is flat
- There are a lot of repeating dialogue lines and a reinforcement of 'ideas', I recognize that the reiteration is to make sure the readers 'get it', but for me the pattern is jarringly robotic
- Performance: The narration isn't engaging. The VA has talent with creating different voices, but I just can't get into it. I don't know why but her delivery of the characters is extraordinarily flat. Does this mean the characters are flawed? The writing? Or the performance? I don't know. I am going to try to read the book on KU to see if the book is OK alone.

The indifferent:
- Full disclosure, I listen to audiobooks while doing tedious things. Need to work on an excel for 20 hours at work? Audiobook. Need to clean or organize for two hours? Audiobook. Sick of listening to music while doing a low intensity workout? 100% audiobook. So I really tried to power through this book. I made it to chapter 6 or 7? I never drop books, but if the written form (my preferred medium) continues to somehow nose dive into the land of flat, I will need to drop it. Unfortunately, I need to drop this audiobook.

Kind of an expensive purchase for a predictable plot. The narrator started to grate on me, but I realized it wasn't her performance so much as some of the more two dimensional characters. I still have 10 hours left. I don't know if I will make it through it. It is a high quality story. Some people have complained, but tropes are re-used throughout all stories and this book is no exception.

The story is great. The reader is atrocious; it detracts from the story. I cringe the entire time it's read. I am only listening to the audiobook so that I can multitask. But this hurts the impact of the story.
