Clever but with limited career opportunities and on the brink of forty, Jean lives a dreary existence that includes caring for her demanding widowed mother, who rarely leaves the house. Lazy ending
Revisado: 01-19-25
With excellent performance by Karen Cass, I thoroughly enjoyed being carried along with the well drawn out and sympathetic characters and was so interested in seeing how all the loose ends would be resolved. Would Howard and Jean find a way to be together? Would Jean be able to free herself from her mother? And what about Gretchen and Margaret? But did the author just get tired of writing? The book ends abruptly. And not like The Bee Sting ended unresolved. That made sense. This was so totally irritating that I ended up hating the book and discouraging friends from reading it because the end was so ridiculous. The author writes well but I will not read her other books in fear of more laziness.

I have loved all of Michael Robotham’s books until this one. I had to stop listening halfway through despite liking the performance. Main character does such stupid things. Hard to care what happens to her.

Historia
It is the early 1980s and fifteen-year-old Libby is obsessed with The Field Guide to the Trees of North America, a gift from her father before he died. She finds solace in “The Kingdom,” a stand of red oak and mountain laurel near her home in suburban Pennsylvania, where she can escape from her family and share menthols with her best friend. One night, while driving home, Libby’s mother, exhausted with the fighting in the backseat, pulls over and orders Libby’s little sister Ellen to walk home. What none of this family knows as they drive off is what will happen next.

Performance (pacing, voices) was excellent. Yes, a coming of age story but so rich in the details. Rolling Stones quotes. The trees and woods. Smoking weed, How friendship works. How parents fail. How children just haven’t seen enough of life to make good decisions all the time. Well done Una Mannion.

Pandemic pleasure
Revisado: 10-30-20
I loved the slow pace and care to illustrate that investigations don’t reach solutions as TV shows suggest in 45 minutes. That interviewing and just talking finally builds and builds until little pieces start clinging together. It was pure luxury to follow along the perfectly chosen words and sentiments and to watch and listen to Robin’s and Strike’s inner dilemmas regarding their relationship. The donkey balloon was genius. I want to live that life.

He can read as well as write!
Revisado: 09-28-20
John Le Carré has been a go to author for me since I was 20 whenever needed a break from my field of numbers to delve into a world of big words and well crafted sentences. I’m not sure I’ve listened to one of his books before, only read. I actually didn’t look at who the narrator was before I purchased but I did listen to the sample to make sure the words were standing for themselves with added drama from the narrator. So when I registered that Le Carré himself wasn’t the narrator, I worried. Not usually a good situation. But so perfect here. My guess is that he writes his books by saying them aloud. How else is the dialog so authentic. Kudos. An exceptional story, but of course I expected that, and an excellent read.

Broke my leg and am wheelchair bound so I just listen to books all day while doing needlework. With so many hours in a day it’s been tough to find books to keep up with my demand. I first re-listened to all of Nesbo’s Harry Holes. Then I started on Robotham’s . Was about to turn to book 6 when I saw this new release. So thrilled with the new characters and narrator. Can’t wait to see where he takes them.

Blew me away. I kept wondering how someone so young write so perfectly and truthfully about 1985 and AIDS and the impact of death and loss. I had one close friend and co-worker die of it in 1988. He was my one tiny window into the NYC gay community and what they were going through. Makkai gets it right and expresses it so well. And as a mother of daughters currently the same as a Claire I get how Claire’s childhood was in the shadow of this loss and that it would have been impossible not to have had an impact. Kudos.

Some reviews which took exception to the story line put me off buying this initially but I am such of fan of Michael Robothan’s skill at word craftsmanship and Sean Barrett’s performances that I took the plunge and was so glad I did. Such a nice change from sociopaths. Was the story believable? About as believable as having serial killers in action every few years. The story worked as the telling of it kept me interested the whole way.

Historia
Michael Robotham's Suspect, hailed as "a lightning-paced debut" by Entertainment Weekly, was an international best seller that raised the bar for thrillers. Now two characters from that acclaimed novel, Detective Vincent Ruiz and psychologist Joe O'Loughlin, return for the electrifying Lost. When Detective Ruiz is pulled from the Thames, he has a bullet in his leg, a photograph of a missing (and presumed dead) girl in his pocket, and absolutely no memory of what happened.

So glad I stumbled on this author. I am so picky and even though Nesbo and Alder-Olsen are prolific I still have long waits between books. First person narrators can be tough but Ray Lonnen perfectly captures the voice that is necessary.
