Historia
The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes. Here in this land of howling wind and infernal sand, four siblings find themselves scattered and lost. Their father was a sand diver, one of the elite few who could travel deep beneath the desert floor and bring up the relics and scraps that keep their people alive. But their father is gone. And the world he left behind might be next.

Incredible world building - TW below!
Revisado: 01-24-25
TW: this book contains mentions of sexual assault, and mentions of prostitution in a disparaging manner. It also contains death scenes.
Review: amazing book. Honestly, one of the best examples of world building. I hope people make fan art of this

Students improved greatly

I’m a sped teacher - the ‘modifying building thinking classrooms for different settings’ was a necessary supplement. I think this method works for all kids. It works in the general Ed setting and pull out at my middle school

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 12-08-24
Trigger: domestic violence, murder, alcoholism
Good plot, good characters, great suspense - makes you wonder and keep reading and thinking, but also won’t give you nightmares. Would recommend and read more by this author.
I found the description of living in CA and Texas to be flat and based on stereotypes (like they couldn’t look past the “so much plastic surgery and celebrities in all the grocery stores at LA” false stereotype - particularly irksome to me being from CA) which made it a lot less believable. Some side character descriptions also fell a little flat - but the protagonist and other main characters were well done.
The reader did a good job - but I wish the “let’s kill” voice was a little less intense. I won’t give any spoilers but this is a good read! One of the only true crime books I can stomach reading, as I’m a real wimp. Author does such a good job of truly fleshing out women characters and also doesn’t focus on the domestic violence situation in a gratuitous manner. I didn’t figure out who did it until near the end, which I appreciate

Historia
Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Historia
Drawing on his own experience of feeling undervalued and invisible in classrooms as a young man of color, and merging his experiences with more than a decade of teaching and researching in urban America, award-winning educator Christopher Emdin offers a new lens on an approach to teaching and learning in urban schools. He begins by taking to task the perception of urban youth of color as unteachable, and he challenges educators to embrace and respect each student's culture.

Great!
Revisado: 08-17-20
Can be repetitive at times, but is great and valuable overall. Definitely a bit too basic at certain points if you’ve been reading a lot about CRT, but overall this book has a great message. Listening to this book rejuvenated me as a teacher, and confirmed some suspicions I had about the teaching world. I will refer back to it later. Def take notes! Glad I purchased.
