Historia
England 1586. Alyce Bradley has few choices when her father decides it is time she marry, as many refuse to see her as other than the girl she once was - unruly, outspoken, and close to her grandmother, a woman suspected of witchcraft. Thomas Granville, an ambitious privateer, inspires fierce loyalty in those close to him and hatred in those he has crossed. Beyond a large dowry, he is seeking a virtuous and dutiful wife. Neither he nor Alyce expect more from marriage than mutual courtesy and respect.

liked it very much
Revisado: 09-04-24
This was a good fiction novel set in Elizabethan England. The circumstances of the main character made it easy to understand the precarious and oftentimes unsafe lives that women led. Most had very little say over major life decisions. Additionally, this novel conjured the dysfunction and mistrust that often complicates women's relationships with each other. This was an enjoyable read.

Historia
On 22 August 1485, Richard III was killed at Bosworth Field, the last king of England to die in battle. His victorious opponent, Henry Tudor (the future Henry VII), went on to found one of our most famous ruling dynasties. Richard's body was displayed in undignified fashion for two days in nearby Leicester and then hurriedly buried in the church of the Greyfriars. Fifty years later, at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries, the king's grave was lost - its contents believed to be emptied into the river Soar - and Richard III's reputation buried under a mound of Tudor propaganda.

how did this get published?
Revisado: 09-03-24
I was hoping the grave site discovery story would be more interesting. Not just "screen writer has a hunch." More details of what the excavation was digging up would have been interesting. How do they identify the layers? Describe the home & and its owner that built on the property in more depth. If there was a garden path with an R, why? Describe it. Tell us what facts led the owner to make the claim... What happened to the gray friars building? Assuming it fell into disrepair after the reformation, did it fall down, burn down, get carried off stone by stone?
The Richard background was clearly written by a fangirl/fan boy. The case to elevate Richard's reputation was built by tearing other figures down & cherry picked information. We get it- the tudors were awful. But that does not make a self righteous, megalomaniac with 2 illegitimate children, who claimed his pious mother was a whore, & has the blood of 2 nephews on his hands (one whom he swore fealty to and swore to protect!) a good guy. It makes him every bit as awful, if not more so since he committed his atrocities in less than 3 years before he was overthrown. This is a compelling premise, but poorly executed due to lack of objective research and weak arguments.

loved this!
Revisado: 07-31-24
The story is spellbinding. Captain Bob's character is developed full circle. The descriptions were well done and the prose turned a fictional jaunt into a literary classic. Narration was spot on too. Absolutely loved this book!

meh, horrible narrator
Revisado: 07-17-24
Had to skip the "Will" chapters this time. Couldn't stand that narrator's voice. Monotone & so boring!
I was not impressed with this story. Of course, I had to speed through several chapters, avoiding that horrible narrator's voice. As with the first book, the character of Will was really hard to like. Who ditchws their girlfriend when she was being thrown to the wolves? Arabella was built up to be a kick-butt, take charge kind of gal at the end of the previous book, And yet she in this second installment, she puts up with everyone putting her down and treating her like a doormat.again. I guess she really didn't learn anything from her "wild experience" and the character that the author tried to portray as a dynamic, evolving semi-heroine was just another static whiny, female with loser boyfriend.
I've thoroughly enjoyed some of this author's other works so perhaps this spinoff book/series is just a slapdash effort to get a little more roll from the Royal triology? Unfortunately it's disappointing, even as lighthearted chick lit goes. I don't know if I'm up for the third installment.

Cute story
Revisado: 07-14-24
This is a spin off series and I really like the characters. The story was cute, although completely absurd. The female narrator was quite good, but the male narrator was horrible! He was completely monotone; it almost sounded as though he might have some sort of disorder. His terrible narration made it very hard to like the male character. The author was already working uphill, trying to get us to like a standoffish, aloof character. So to give him zero inflection to add a little personality made me question the entire premise of this guy being a TV personality. This is an audio book. Just telling us he's hot, doesn't sell it when his voice is not.

Historia
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

narrator ruined the story
Revisado: 05-20-24
The female narrator was atrocious! She constantly paused md-sentence, like she digit how to speak. Her American accent was terrible & also had a weird pause. The Cassie chapters that had her speaking as James were just confusing. She gave him various accents throughout the book; Irish, Scots, rural American & urban English with a speech impediment, to name a few.
The story was just ok, but the listening experience has me regretting the time I spent listening to it.
