Just Perfect First Date Madness
Revisado: 08-31-23
This short episode from The Bane Chronicles is one of my favorite. The narration by Gareth David-Lloyd helps to remind me once again why Malec is the best pairing in the Shadowhunter Universe. Listening to the awkward stumbles as Magnus and Alec start their road to true love, is captivating ever single time 🧡🤟🏽🧡

Weird Pauses & Text Message
Revisado: 08-12-23
I like this book. I liked it the first time I read it and I still like it now.
The problem with this audiobook was definitely the editing. Throughout the entire narration there were these pauses, that had nothing to do with the story. The pauses just kept pulling me out of the fluidity of the narrative.
I’ve never edited an audiobook but I have edited audio. You can see dead space and I can’t understand why they opted to leave, over and over again.
That was bad and then on chapter 17 a line is repeated twice, which of course was weird. To add insult to injury, narrator Charlie David, received what sounded suspiciously like notifications during chapter 18. This one I really didn’t understand, there are filters for noise reduction.
I still love the book. My only regret is that I bought this audiobook.

Remembering, For Real
Revisado: 08-07-23
Sometimes you revisit a movie or read a book you once loved, only to discover something has dramatically change. It’s the material or it’s you, but it’s not the same.
I read For Real by Alexis Hall for the first time close to nine years ago and came back to these pages with trepidation. Of course I did. Revisiting something often makes me ask, who was this person? This person I used to be had loved this and aghast I wonder, why?
So inching my way slowly to For Real, cautiously I consume one word and then the next.
Only to find the words on the page dance, leave me ravaged and broken, then twisting again and at once I’m enraptured. It was everything and more than I remembered 🖤

Historia
Eight years ago, Adam Elliot made the biggest mistake of his life. Now that mistake is coming back to haunt him. His family’s beloved vineyard has gone into foreclosure, and the new owner is the sister of the only man he’s ever loved - the man he dumped under pressure from family and friends who thought the match was beneath him. When Freddy Wentworth, aka the bad boy of Bishop’s Glen, left town with a broken heart, he vowed never to return. But a recently widowed friend needs his help. He’s a rich and famous celebrity chef now, though, so everyone can just eff right off.

Persuasive and Beautiful
Revisado: 08-05-23
My favorite Jane Austen is Persuasion. And I get it. I really do get it. I get the whole Mr. Darcy thing and I understand perfectly why reverting to some, heretofore, unknown Regency version of yourself and swooning is a reasonable response in an unreasonable world. Elizabeth and Darcy remain, as ever, iconic. And still I choose to break my own heart in endless loops of reading and rereading Persuasion.
I’m there with Anne and Wentworth. But it’s mostly Anne, I ravage my soul with her story. End the book. Pick it up and start again.
Now, there’s this, Undue Influence by Jenny Holiday. Adam Elliot is every bit the modern-day version of Anne. Facing the coercion and not persuasion from the people he loved or placed his trust in. They in turn take everything from him, leaving him raw and alone, abandoned to watch the man he loves carry on in a new life.
Yes, Persuasion is still my favorite. And yes, this is now my favorite modern day adaptation of the story which still gnaws at my insides and makes me want to believe in love.

Historia
Rafael Castro is so far out of his element he can't even see it anymore. Carlisle College in Massachusetts is a long way from his Chicago home, even farther from his Dominican Republic roots. The only thing keeping him attached to his last nerve is the prospect of seeing Denny Winslow again. The first time they met, Denny taught Rafi to fly across the water, rowing hard in a knife-like boat.

Cooper North is very easily becoming one of my favorite audiobook narrators. That said, this book, with a Latino character providing the main POV, was a problem for me. Even though my primary language is English, I am Latina. The pronunciation of the letter H in the word “hermanito,” made me flinch as if I’d received a physical blow. And every single time he said, “Jesuscristo,” felt like nails on a chalkboard. I love Amy Jo Cousins writing and want to reiterate that Cooper North is quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators, but this right here … this hurt.
