Historia
Sara suffered a debilitating fear of asserting herself. Spencer experienced crippling social anxiety. Bonnie was shut down, disconnected from her feelings. These patients all came to psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel seeking treatment for depression, but in fact none of them were chemically depressed. Rather, Jacobs Hendel found that they’d all experienced traumas in their youth that caused them to put up emotional defenses that masqueraded as symptoms of depression. Jacobs Hendel led these patients and others toward lives newly capable of joy and fulfillment....

Great info with flat narrator
Revisado: 06-04-22
Info and practices are invaluable. Unfortunately, the author reading book is ironically very flat and emotionless throughout.

Historia
Rooted in her experiences growing up in an evangelical Christian family, Jamie Lee Finch’s You Are Your Own offers an overview of evangelicalism and the painful confusion and anxiety experienced under its demands. Finch explores the mechanisms of trauma and how fundamentalist denominations match the patterns connected with PTSD. She elaborates on the doubt, guilt, fear, and grief that haunt those leaving the evangelical faith and offers an approach to help them recover healthy self-worth and resilience.

Jamie's work has had a profound impact on my life
Revisado: 05-30-22
I listened to this audio version after hearing Jamie on The Liturgists and learning that I had scrupulosity / religious OCD. The book introduced me formally to the concept of religious trauma and, at the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it changed my life in the course it set me on for my healing journey. I've since had the pleasure of working with Jamie in both her support group and one-on-one coaching. I'm currently facilitating my own group around the book, and that's been deeply fulfilling as well.
Jamie's book covers a lot of the same material as other religious trauma books, but it's much more condensed and easily digestible compared to something like Marlene Winell's (also excellent) Leaving the Fold (which Jamie references throughout). I further love that she narrates this herself! I've bought the book in four different formats now and can't recommend it highly enough!
