Boring and predictable
Revisado: 02-01-25
This is the second book by Nita Prose. The book rambles on and very predictable. Boring plot. I quit with 3 hours left to finish. No more time to waste.

Historia
In this “jewel of a novel” (The Observer), Hilary Byrd flees his demons and the dark undercurrents of contemporary life in England for a former British hill station in south India. Charmed by the foreignness of his new surroundings and by the familiarity of everything the British have left behind, he finds solace in life’s simple pleasures, travelling by rickshaw around the small town with his driver Jamshed and staying in a mission house beside the local presbytery where, after a chance meeting, the Padre and his adoptive daughter Priscilla take Hilary under their wing.

I quit listening to this about halfway through the book. Not sure how this book got such rave reviews from the NY Times. It went no where and all I know is a preacher, a boarder and his helper.

Historia
When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

Historia
New Delhi, 3 a.m. A speeding Mercedes jumps the curb and in the blink of an eye, five people are dead. It’s a rich man’s car, but when the dust settles there is no rich man at all, just a shell-shocked servant who cannot explain the strange series of events that led to this crime. Nor can he foresee the dark drama that is about to unfold. Deftly shifting through time and perspective in contemporary India, Age of Vice is an epic, action-packed story propelled by the seductive wealth, startling corruption, and bloodthirsty violence of the Wadia family.

Hard to keep track of the time frame
Revisado: 05-21-23
I had to keep looking at the chapters to see what year they were in. The violence and drugs became a bit too much. Seemed like a novel of a doped up character Sunny. I kept wondering what was going to happen to Ajay. It would be interesting to know how much of the novel is taken up with people drunk and stoned.

Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

I was enjoying the book until another character starts talking about cotton and a completely different time period. I tried to listen for an hour and turned it off. this is not even mentioned in the notes about the book. I received a refund.

Historia
“My life’s done a somersault,” wrote Mário de Andrade in a letter, on the verge of taking a leap. After years of dreaming about Amazonia, and almost fifty years before Bruce Chatwin ventured into one of the most remote regions of South America in In Patagonia, Andrade, the queer mixed-race “pope” of Brazilian modernism and author of the epic novel Macunaíma, finally embarks on a three-month steamboat voyage up the great river and into one of the most dangerous and breathtakingly beautiful corners of the world.

Too Many Days...Too Little Detail
Revisado: 05-13-23
Not sure how this got such great reviews in the NY Times. The book is made of of many days and the story might be a few minutes. May 2,3,4,5,6. Too much description of the flowers, meat market, a dolphin etc. Very little about the characters in the novel. I got tired of hearing the days mentioned every 90 seconds and quit. NOt sure what the plot was if there was one. A bit too much stress on the Portuguese names.
