Historia
Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the listener with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation.

Striking balance
Revisado: 08-13-22
The author did an amazing service finding the balance between the philosophical and practical concept of happiness. All other books I have read have erred in either over-simplifying happiness to set of platitudes or over-complicating the concept as a set of abstract mental constructs.
I sincerely appreciate the way Haidt found a way to suggest actions for happiness motivated by a combination of science and empirical evidence born from human traditions.

Historia
We think of science as a way of discovering certainty in an unpredictable world; experiments are designed to objectively measure cause and effect. Yet science often produces more new questions than answers, and all scientific theories can change with new and better observations. Scientific philosophers say that "objective" observations actually depend heavily on the observer's intuition and point of view.

Not what I thought
Revisado: 09-04-18
I was expecting a history of scientific thought. There is some of that but there is as much about relativistic arguments within science. These arguments appear to try and persuade the reader regarding what is knowable and limitations in science. Then, the book concludes by affirming that science is responsible for the advances in civilization. So I was left confused on the position of the author.

Not a fan
Revisado: 04-04-10
I just finished listening to three books on parenting; Six-Point Plan for Raising Happy, Healthy Children; Wonderful Ways to Love a Child; and ScreamFree Parenting.
I did not agree with the author's premise regarding children, which I took to be that they are individuals that can figure out things on their own. Thus the parents' role is to allow them the freedom to explore with minimal oversight.
However, I may very well be wrong and the author right as to the best way to raise children. However, her arguments are not well founded and appear to boil down to personal experience. While her credentials in child behavior exceed mine, they are still only opinion. What I would have preferred would be to have her arguments based upon peer reviewed research. This would have been a more persuasive approach and perhaps convinced me that her philosophy and approach to parenting is superior to mine. As it stands now, I only find myself at odds with the author and unconvinced to follow her suggestions.

Parents > Kids
Revisado: 04-04-10
Author posits the issues of raising children today are due to mixing priorities where children are considered more important than parents. Rest of book is weak evidence to support this position. Evidence given typically falls either in the form of an argument from history, anecdotes, or religion.

Best of three
Revisado: 04-04-10
I just finished listening to three books on parenting; Six-Point Plan for Raising Happy, Healthy Children; Wonderful Ways to Love a Child; and this book, ScreamFree Parenting. Of the three, I found this one to be the best. It was presented in a logical manner, and the author does a good job at providing evidence for his arguments.
While I would have liked a bit more rigor in his arguments backed by scientific studies, I understand his intent wasn't a scientific article but a book for a more general audience. Still, I enjoyed the fact that he made an attempt at providing more evidence for his thoughts just than gut instinct and common sense, (which was all the other two books offered.)
I find the topic of parenting to be a difficult one to research as most is opinion. However, this text did a good job at trying to balance thoughts with evidence and the result is a good book on parenting.
