Historia
Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day." A thrilling and important piece of American literature!

A sobering look back at the national sin that will forever necessitate an asterisk beneath, "America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere".

Historia
When "White Fang" was first published in 1906, Jack London was well on his way to becoming one of the most famous, popular, and highly paid writers in the world. White Fang stands out as one of his finest achievements, a spellbinding novel of life in the northern wilds. In gripping detail, London bares the savage realities of the battle for survival among all species in a harsh, unyielding environment. White Fang is part wolf, part dog, a ferocious and magnificent creature through whose experiences we see and feel essential rhythms and patterns of life in the animal kingdom and among mankind as well.

Does not soften the harshness of life. For my kids sake, I was thankful and surprised by the ending.

Historia
Louisa first met Robert Lockhart when they were both 17. Their stop-start romance lasted decades, in which time he became a celebrated composer and she an acclaimed novelist. Always snapping at their heels was Robert’s alcoholism, a helpless, ferocious dependency that affected his personality before crippling and finally, despite five years of hard-won sobriety, killing him. There are a million love stories and a million stories of addiction. This one is truly transcendent.

I can't describe it as entertaining. It is a young woman's charitable recounting of a prolonged life experience excruciating to live through and horrific to imagine in the reader's mind.

Depressing story with unredeeming ending.
Revisado: 11-03-18
This may be a well written book, however 80% of the story is quite miserable and ends with an ironic fable.

Historia
"Wuthering Heights" is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centers (as an adjective, "wuthering" is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.

No fairytale. The ending may leave you melancholy.
Revisado: 09-23-18
A great book, but a terrible, gut wrenching story. Virtually no flash of happiness from start to finish. It seems to me that all classic literature I've read, no matter how sad or horrific, has a uplifting or happy conclusion, even A Tale of Two City's. Not this one. At the conclusion, I just felt a sadness, for the characters, that made it hard to believe this was a fictitious story.
This was the only book that has ever compelled me to leave a review.
