Historia
Charlotte Collins, nee Lucas, is the respectable wife of Hunsford’s vicar, and sees to her duties by rote: keeping house, caring for their adorable daughter, visiting parishioners, and patiently tolerating the lectures of her awkward husband and his condescending patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Intelligent, pragmatic, and anxious to escape the shame of spinsterhood, Charlotte chose this life, an inevitable one so socially acceptable that its quietness threatens to overwhelm her. Then she makes the acquaintance of Mr. Travis, a local farmer and tenant of Lady Catherine.

Best Jane Austen Fan Fiction I've Read
Revisado: 03-11-21
What impressed me most about this book is the way the writer stays faithful to the time period, while fleshing out Charlotte's character and situation in ways that tugged at my heart and kept me reading. I didn't want it to end.

Historia
In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

It was easy to read, but I kept waiting for some substance. I waited and waited. The narration was good, which is why I probably persevered.

Historia
Bill Bryson is an unabashed Anglophile who, through a mistake of history, happened to be born and bred in Iowa. Righting that error, he spent 20 years in England before deciding to repatriate. This was partly to let his wife and children experience life in Bryson's homeland - and partly because he had read that 3.7 million Americans believed that they had been abducted by aliens at one time or another. It was thus clear to him that his people needed him. But before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire, Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain.

Laugh Out Loud Funny
Revisado: 08-07-18
Bill Bryson is such an entertaining writer I don't know why I waited so long to read this book. My husband listened to it with me, and we had such a fit of giggles at one point that I immediately bought Neither Here Nor There, which we listened to with equal pleasure straight after this book. Even if you don't intend to travel to England anytime soon, viewing the country from his American perspective is a blast.

Historia
The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in them.

The Book That Keeps On Giving
Revisado: 04-30-18
What I love about this book is that it reads like a story. The personal anecdotes are riveting. The explanations of dog behaviour have improved my relationship with my own dog (face the direction you want to go when you call your dog. Counter intuitive, but it works like a charm!) The book has stuck with me long after I've listened to it, and I suspect I'll listen again. Ellen Archer did a great job of the narration.

Best Book I've Read For Ages
Revisado: 01-31-18
The story of "Girl", the Neanderthal, was so gripping, that I regretted when the narrative switched to Rose, in the present day. But each story was excellent, and sped along to a dramatic conclusion. Like other readers, I would have liked a longer conclusion, but it was moving, entertaining, well-written, and I'm still thinking about it days later. I'll definitely reread it. I hope Audible will offer Claire Cameron's first novel soon!

Historia
Lucy and Owen, ambitious, thoroughly-therapized New Yorkers, have taken the plunge, trading in their crazy life in a cramped apartment for Beekman, a bucolic Hudson Valley exurb. They've got a 200-year-old house, an autistic son obsessed with the Titanic, and 17 chickens, at last count. It's the kind of paradise where stay-at-home moms team up to cook the school's "hot lunch", dads grill grass-fed burgers, and, as Lucy observes, "chopping kale has become a certain kind of American housewife's version of chopping wood".

Fun & Compelling
Revisado: 06-22-17
The premise hooked me, though I was concerned that the story might feel shallow and unrealistic. Not so. The characters were gripping, especially one minor character, Sunny Bang, whose charming sense of fair play made me smile whenever she spoke. I had a bit of hero worship going on there. The story stayed relatable, funny and heart-wrenching till the end. The editing was poor though, with repeated sentences throughout the book that detracted from the story.

Historia
Two travelers - Rachel Katzman and Liam Finucane - arrive in a field in rural England, disheveled and weighed down with hidden money. Turned away at a nearby inn, they are forced to travel by coach all night to London. They are not what they seem but rather colleagues who have come back in time from a technologically advanced future, posing as wealthy West Indies planters - a doctor and his spinster sister. Their mission: meet, befriend, and steal from Jane Austen herself.

Good-ish
Revisado: 05-11-17
I've fantasized about time travel, so glimpsing what daily life in 1815 would have been like was a blast. The details of Jane Austen's life, her friends and family, was the best part of the book. And yet it was easy to stop listening to, and I wasn't in a rush to pick it up again. The story of our main characters, the time travelers, just wasn't gripping. My mind wandered, and I'd have to back up. Though it had a fantastic premise, the book was strangely dull.

Historia
In the male-dominated field of animation, Mel Vaught and Sharon Kisses are a dynamic duo, the friction of their differences driving them: Sharon, quietly ambitious but self-doubting; Mel, brash and unapologetic, always the life of the party. Best friends and artistic partners since the first week of college, where they bonded over their working-class roots and obvious talent, they spent their twenties ensconced in a gritty Brooklyn studio. Working, drinking, laughing.

As annoying as the TV test signal
Revisado: 03-20-17
I had high hopes for this one. Two women collaborators in a male-dominated industry? I'm in. But it starts slow, the characters are a quarter of an inch deep, unlikeable, and most unforgivably, dull to the core. The best thing about this book is the cover. I even gave it a second chance, but within minutes it lulled me into a stupor.

I'm Afraid Of The Dark Again
Revisado: 03-20-17
When I decided to read Agatha Christie, I googled a list of her ten best books. While I love the Poirot/Hastings novels for their witty appeal, this one, (no Poirot) is by far her scariest, most well-crafted book. Something about the concept and the pacing is so chilling, that at one point while I was listening, something brushed my leg and I squealed like a little girl. I had to stop listening and pace around to calm down. Don't listen to this at night unless you want to lie awake wondering, "what was that noise?"

Historia
Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant—and it does.

Fifty Shades Meets Psycho
Revisado: 01-28-17
I wanted to like this book. It does some things well-- the pacing and the alternating perspectives of the women. But it borrows from Gone Girl and Fifty Shades and even Psycho (shower scene!) and it doesn't borrow well. Parts of the story are far-fetched. And the characters are both undeveloped and unrealistic in ways that make the story lose all menace.
