Historia
Cal's "honeymoon" didn't start off quite how he'd planned. For starters, he was heading somewhere he didn't actually want to go. And secondly, he was going alone and unmarried. He had no idea that his first visit to New York City would also land him in the middle of a domestic terror attack, forcing him to flee Manhattan in a desperate bid to survive. This was no ordinary terror attack. The Movement, in a misguided attempt to seize political control of the USA, unwittingly invited the destruction of their homeland.

Unable to suspend my disbelief
Revisado: 07-05-24
Somehow, a domestic terror organization, with thousands of members who are mostly veterans or service members, causes the collapse of the United States. All secretly set in motion by China, who has agents and weapons stateside to do a bit of direct action themselves. And somehow, not a single person slipped up and said something they shouldn't, and none of the US's intelligence agencies cottoned onto a massive, multi state terror attack being planned. Also, the writer seems not to understand US military force organization, amd keeps mentioning a Narional Guatf commander and his "brigade" participating in laying siege to powerplants and the White House. I think he meant "company", or maybe "battalion", seeing as a brigade is 3-5 thousand people. Either way, you're telling me that every single soldier in that entire element was on board with the plan, and kept their mouth shut about it? There's not a chance in hell. The premise is so ridiculous it's unreal. I made it about halfway before I had to give it up.

Historia
Bishop is trapped deep inside Montana's Apex Valley along with his injured wife, a shotgun-wielding stranger named Colbrick, and a sneaking suspicion he's never making it back to Chicago. Things no man has seen before haunt the woods. Strange animal species creep behind pine trees, some of them with flashing red tags that blink faster and faster. Giant birds mimic the sound of humans and lord over the sky. Leaf-shaped creatures attack anything that moves and flash vivid colors across their glistening backs.

Could not finish it
Revisado: 06-14-24
I'm an electrician, and usually like to listen to cheesy scifi/horror books while I'm doing some simple, repetitive, time consuming task. I got this for free, and listened to the first hour or so, and man, it is rough. The narrator is absolutely awful, everything is super flat with very little emotional expression for the dialog. And the writing is just bad. i tried to give it a shot, but after an hour, couldn't do it. give this one a pass.

Historia
Crease is known in Weaver as ‘the bug guy', the man who takes care of insects and other critters. But what emerges from the shadows of the town's waste plant is beyond anything found in nature. Fist-sized cockroaches. Bird-sized wasps. Spiders, millipedes, ticks, all swollen to enormous bulk with vicious appetites to match. And other things, creatures that should never exist.

would make a great B flick
Revisado: 05-23-24
The overall story was pretty great. In the same sort of vein as a lot 80s and 90s B-grade horror films. Made me think of stuff lole "Ticks", or "Skeeters". Pretty cheeseball, but there were some legit body horror moments, as well as some decent comedic parts involving Johnny to take the edge off. The vivid descriptions of the things that happen to the characters who are attacked by the creatures is pretty intense. Overall, I would say the writing is pretty strong, for what it is. Better than anything I could come up with, for sure.
The only gripe I might say I have is that I had a bit of a hard time figuring whether the book took place in the US or not. From what I understand, the author is from England, and while he does a decent job of giving the vibe of the American Midwest, he has a habit of using British English terms that threw me off at times. Not having heard of Dead Crow before this, I had decided it must be set in Canada, until a character explicity stated otherwise. His use of meters, rather than feet or yards, as well as referring to police car "beacons", rather than lights, and a few other British turns of phrase contributed to this. It's a minor gripe, however.
Now, if he can get somebody to make a decent, low budget horror film out of it, I'd be set!

The first attack occurs in the underwater caverns of the Bahamas. Two professional divers exploring the unknown. A monstrous flesh-ripping predator they never see coming. Now the attacks are coming closer and closer to shore. A sun-soaked playground for sea-loving tourists. A human feasting ground for whatever lurks beneath.

Good equivalent to a B flick monster movie
Revisado: 05-21-24
Thw voice overs and sound effects are great. The story itself is pretty good, if a bit predictable. Typical monster movie behavior by characters who should probably know better. Not a lot of surprises, all things considered. My one real gripe is a minor spoiler :
They spend a decent chunk of time describing Dora, the ROV that they bring to explore the blue holes. Specifically, they mention that it has a waterproof keyboard and monitor on it, so divers can communicate with the operator. Near the end of the book, when Will and Ashley are trapped in the tunnel, and in the process of suffocating, Dora gets sent on, amd they make no mention nor effort to use the keyboard, even when Will picks it up to pan around and show the survivors. He would have to have seen it, ots described as being on the side of the ROV, but neither Will, nor Val or Mack use it. instead, Will uses hand gestures that the others need to interpret. This is probably the weakest part of the whole story.

On a hot summer night in Montauk, the bodies of two local bar patrons are discovered in the dunes, torn to shreds, their identities unrecognizable.... In another part of town, a woman's backyard is invaded by four terrifying creatures that defy any kind of description. What's clear is that they're hostile - and they're ravenous....

Good performance, poor story.
Revisado: 05-10-24
The book starts out pretty good, giving some Dean Koontz or Stephen King style vibes. However, from the midpoint on, it goes downhill. Lots of characters get introduced, only to have their story go nowhere, then get killed abruptly. They also continually talk about military and police using service revolvers, which haven't been a thing in decades. And, of course, at the end, the New York National Guardsman and other military personnel show unbelievable levels of incompetence when dealing with the threat. Not to mention they cheerfully just start burning people alive in their cars and homes en mass. Because everyone knows that soldiers just kill innocent American citizens by the hundreds all the time, no questions asked. It's not like there are literal rules about not obeying orders like that. if it had been a small cadre of CIA spooks in some remote mountain town, it would maybe be believable, but this is just up the road from Manhattan, and I just couldn't suspend my disbelief enough.

Great continuation to a great series
Revisado: 04-04-22
I've been reading Swann's books since the original Moreau series. it's cool to see he kept the universe going. And, in response to the guy who says this "Copies 'The Expanse'", kinda hard for Swann to rip off a book series whose first book released several months after the last of the "Apotheosis" books.

Historia
It's been nearly 200 years since the collapse of the Confederacy, the last government to claim humanity's colonies. So when signals come in revealing lost human colonies that could shift the power balance, the race is on between the Caliphate ships and a small team of scientists and mercenaries. But what awaits them all is a threat far beyond the scope of any human government.

Don't listen to the one stadium reviewer above.
Revisado: 04-04-22
The person above who left a one star review and was complaining about how the Caliphate were "the bad guys" and the Catholic Church the "Good Guys" obviously did not listen to the book. It's a great continuation of the universe Swann built up with the previous seven books. The narrator was somewhat mediocre.
