With their father away at war, Meg, the oldest and prettiest sister, and Jo, the tomboy, take care of Beth, the shy one, and Amy, the artist. When their beloved 'Marmee' must leave to nurse Father, who is badly wounded in the war, the girls sustain themselves by putting to use the lessons of loyalty and patience they had learned from their family.

beautifully dramatized
Revisado: 10-07-22
Classic touching and moral tale to be read before Little Men. This is the backstory. Little Men goes on to illustrate the bit of good that can be taken from a few insights of Rousseau's Emile, but arranged around a core of Christian and Platonic Goodness as to redeem progressive education from the Hell to which it usually leads.

History worth hearing regardless of politics
Revisado: 07-29-22
Those who speak are eloquent, speaking with charm from the heart of what a great and optimistic leader they experienced in Reagan. It's worth your time regardless of your politics.

Historia
Have we been taught to discount the veracity and deeper meaning of our emotional resonance with the world around us? In The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis looks at the curriculum of the English "prep school" and begins to wonder if this subliminal teaching has indeed produced a generation who discount such a nature.

can an elementary school textbook destroy a soul?
Revisado: 01-13-22
Yes, children are in a cave, indoctrinate by ideology in schools so young that the sources are long forgotten. This may be even more so today, when we look to an elementary school textbook to teach, say, how to write well, we instead get amateur philosophy. Our children become "change agents," irreverent radicals that despise tradition to the ultimate detriment of their own happiness. How did this happen? Look closely at their elementary school textbook with Lewis as your guide. Your eyes may be opened.

Eliot. Vigorously written, the book represents conservatism as an ideology born of sound intellectual traditions.

beautifully written, but Adolescent and shallow

I would not read this one again. pseudo profundity, uninspiring, popular Machiavellian morality, meaningless. I can see how it appeals to a certain secular taste.

Historia
Canada is not one nation, but three: English Canada, Quebec, and First Nations. Yet as a country Canada is very successful, in part because it maintains national diversity through bilingualism, multiculturalism, and federalism. Alongside this contemporary openness Canada also has its own history to contend with; with a legacy of broken treaties and residential schools for its Indigenous peoples, making reconciliation between Canada and First Nations an ongoing journey, not a destination.

Revisionist history, Left wing, Narrow, Banal
Revisado: 02-14-21
if you like your history unabashedly politicized on the political Left and don't like your closed mind challenged, this book is for you.
It leaves out a serious engagement with all sides of Canadian identity, and it does not engage with the full fruitful tensions that makes for the best history writing. The "neo-liberals" are the enemy, nationalism becomes "nationalisms," there is complete silence on pro-life perspectives of the abortion debate. I could go on. So much is left out. Banal.
This will quickly become a dated book on account of the author's mind being entirely enslaved to the merely ephemeral opinions of the narrow and uneducated prejudices of his own time. It is not good history; not a great book. don't waste your time.
If you can find nothing better, then hold your nose and use this book to glean some chronological facts of Canadian history. It could provide a sophisticated reader a glimpse into the cramped narrowness of the shadows of a closed-mind. But you get this from any newspaper or merely popular blog. It is Left-wing political revisionist "history," quickly dated pulp.

Historia
Each year, teachers, administrators, and parents face a barrage of new education software, games, workbooks, and professional development programs purporting to be "based on the latest research." While some of these products are rooted in solid science, the research behind many others is grossly exaggerated. This book, written by a top thought leader, helps everyday teachers, administrators, and family members - who don't have years of statistics courses under their belts - separate the wheat from the chaff....

I'm glad I took the time to read this. It helps me separate the charlatans from the solid researchers. This book would make the next generation a better place if only it were required reading for not just teachers, but educational researchers most of all.

Historia
In this eloquent and persuasive book, Neil Postman examines the deep and broad effects of television culture on the manner in which we conduct our public affairs, and how "entertainment values" have corrupted the very way we think. As politics, news, religion, education, and commerce are given less and less expression in the form of the printed word, they are rapidly being reshaped to suit the requirements of television.
