Historia
More than 800 sailors served aboard the Sterett during her hazardous and demanding duties in World War II. This is the story of those men and their beloved ship, recorded by a junior officer who served on the famous destroyer from her commissioning in 1939 to April 1943, when he was wounded at the Battle of Tulagi. Peppered with the kind of vivid, authentic details that could only be provided by a participant, the book is the saga of a gallant fighting ship that earned a Presidential Unit Citation for her part in the Third Battle of Savo Island, where she took on a battleship.

Historia
Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman, or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow shows in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Having read or listened to many words written about General Grant, I find this one of the best.

Historia
The definitive biography of Herbert Hoover, one of the most remarkable Americans of the 20th century - a revisionist account that will forever change the way Americans understand the man, his presidency, and his battle against the Great Depression. A poor orphan who built a fortune, a great humanitarian, a president elected in a landslide and then routed in the next election, arguably the father of both New Deal liberalism and modern conservatism - Herbert Hoover is also one of our least understood presidents.

Walking in his shoes
Revisado: 07-21-18
This book comes as close to allowing the listener to walk in Hoovers shoes as any biography I have listened to. His life was extraordinarily complex as was the man. This should be required "reading" for anyone wihing to understand the 32d president. An admirable product for a great biographer.

Professor Greenberg does a great job of explaining Christmas music. Although he sounds like Penn Jillete (the magician), it is a fun and interesting our that is not wasted.

Though generally remembered by history as two very different personalities, the soft-spoken Lincoln and often-crude Grant in fact shared similar drive and determination, as this in-depth character study illustrates.

The best arguement for Grant being what he was, and not for what the "Lost Cause" paints him to be.

Although the book is from the standpoint of location, it is actually a story of how Black freedom took hold in the nation's capital.
It shows how the holding of Washington was the crucial factor in the Union victory.

Great Work
Revisado: 09-15-03
This unabridged 2nd half of Adams is fantastic. Could not wait to be finished, yet was sad when I had. McCullough does a wonderful job of giving the full picture of Adams, and even a more than passing view of Jefferson. May well change your mind on WHO should be on the ten dollar bill. The intrigue of Hamilton was something I had only heard glimses of. In total I rate this book Fantastic.

Revisado: 07-18-03
A vivid account of everything Adams. If you thought you knew everything about American Revolutionary Period History, then this work will change your mind. Quite possibly, McCullough will change the way this country feels about John Adams as he changed the way that we see Harry S. Truman. A MUST READ (or HEAR) for anyone interested in History.
