ai is bad for audiobooks

with an actual narrator reading this short story it can easily be a 5 star book, but the ai voice is a failure at knowing what is a question, what is a word drawn out, and where a sentence ends.

but since this is an actual free book for everyone with an audible membership regardless of how long you have been a member, you are definitely getting what you paid for. and as an aside, if audible is continuing down this road with ai narration they either need to do a qc on the audio before pushing it for public release or risk losing members.

you like irrelevant trivia this is for you, but...

i admit that i like stupid irrelevant trivia and i would gladly buy a written copy of this book. however i cannot recommend getting this audio version of this book. the ai voice reading is terrible, mispronouncing words, using different pronunciations of words spelled the same, inappropriate pauses, sections repeated, in essence the stuff a competent sound engineer and producer would catch and fix in the final cut. this should tell you the amount of qc checks audible/amazon is doing with these ai read books. you are absolutely getting what you paid for. have a real person read this book and i will re-evaluate my review for it.

the story is dramatic, the AI killed it

this is a book that probably could greatly benefit from a human reading the story, maybe two. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and the AI-ness of the reader is jarring in some cases and the narrator plays a very large part of me enjoying a book.

I think the thing that I love about this series is how much $#!+ the crew gives to each other. I'm laughing just about as much as I am following the action. highly recommended if you like comedy books as well as military scifi.

if jeffrey kafer reads a book I know it's good. if he's is reading a funny book his straight man delivery is *chefs kiss*.

this is a story of its time

keeping in mind that this was written in the 1960s and it's tropes on women the story is pretty gripping and as of 2020 quite convincing. the only problem that I have with the entire story is the ending. through the first 20 chapters you feel the tension of an insane president versus a junior young senator trying to convince other officials the president is nuts when no one else is around. then you get to the last chapter and the resolution is a huge let down. he takes an action you never get the feeling he would take. it's an action so far out in left field it brings the story down.

great story. excellent performance

there is a well known company that produces audio dramas, kind of like films that go on in your head. this production rivals their productions. the acting was excellent and only enhanced the story which was very good as well. for me this was not a 13 hour performance and was very hard to pause when I needed sleep.
