It’s a shame that Hillary Clinton’s name is on this book because there will be people who won’t read it for that reason alone. Hell, there are people that won’t read this review because it’s about her. They’re sick of hearing from her, they don’t want to hear from her again, or they never did.

And there is about 25% of this book that could be interpreted as a “woe is me, it’s everyone else’s fault (but especially Comey and the Russians)” excuse matrix. I found myself shouting at her at times!

HOWEVER, the other 75% is worth reading. She does blame herself, she is realistic, honest, open and importantly this book will eventually stand the test of time - once we have all got less sick of hearing about the 2016 election.

I would offer that even if you don’t read all of it - try the last third where she goes into deep statistical and chronological detail of what happened. She cites numerous numerous (and not all left wing) sources and offers many thoughtful points for discussion and debate. And the last 10% of the book is a call to arms - not to be anti republican or even anti Trump but to be pro- America, to contribute, to serve and to keep going.

I’m glad I read it (along with Comey’s Higher Loyalty). It’s not just for the PantsSuitNation crowd. And if she had come across like this in the election, who knows if the outcome might have been different.

Given current and recent events (everything from Wikileaks, to Snowden, to Trumps election) these events seem prosaic. The story is well told and a fascinating read. Albeit it is, in today’s digital age, slightly amusing to read about a series of leaks that were enabled by carrying Top Secret documents across the country in boxes tied up string and given their own seat on the aircraft...

If you want the abridged version watch Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in The Post.

So, the title leads you to think this will provide some experienced advice for the first female president and, by extension, to female leaders generally. And there are notable points where she does convey this but...

This is really an autopsy on the 2016 US presidential election as seen from a Hillary insider. And it contains an interesting and occasionally infuriating analysis of the campaign from her perspective.

If you’ve had your fill of that election (or Hillary) you might wish to avoid.

If you’ve read Comey’s Higher Loyalty, Hillary’s What Happened and anything about the Trump perspective (from Art of the Deal) onwards, then this is probably surplus to your requirement.

If you haven’t, it’s worth a read and is short enough to be worth your time.

But I wish she’d called it something less misleading. Or made more of the content to justify the title.

I support the death penalty.

I would have said this boldly before I read this book. Some crimes being too heinous, some criminals being unable to rehabilitate and remain permanently dangerous. The right of the victim or their loved ones to “appropriate retribution”.

Having read this though.

The US justice system is too imperfect. Too weighted in bias. Too unable to actually find the guilty person. That state-sanctioned killing simply can’t be justified in a system where we can’t even guarantee the person we plan to lill is the person who could have even committed the crime.

And finally crucially the question of what it makes of us all when we allow a person to be killed by the state.

A great book. Even if you still believe in the death penalty, at least challenge your thinking on it. What about life sentence without parole for non homicide crimes committed by children? What about the mentally disabled?

Whatever you think of Comey. Whatever you think of Trump. Whatever you think of Hillary. Consider reading this. If you don’t, you will likely only ever have one side of a three sided fight. In this day, where objective truth is optional, listen to as many versions of these events as you can then make your mind up.
