Forward the foundation is sort of split in two. The first half is fun and exciting, and takes the form of incidents along the lines of Foundation, in that it highlights brief periods of political intrigue separated by years. Once the intrigue is over, stop reading, because the book turns into a star wars prequel. As the timeline closes in on the beginning of ‘Foundation’, the book gets extremely bogged down in setting the stage for a book written decades beforehand. The intricate games of logic for which Asimov is known are more or less absent. Ultimately, this book isn’t necessary. It tells you a lot about Harry Selden, but seeing as he isn’t all that relevant to the Foundation series, except as a delivery system for predictions and psychological manipulation, intimate knowledge of his life will not effect one’s enjoyment or understanding of the core series. It also cannot stand on its own, since its chained both to prelude and to Foundation.
The plodding nature of the story isn’t helped by its reader, Larry McKeever, who delivers the entire performance with the tone of a medical dissertation. Any passion or heartbreak is blurred into a dull beige of succinctly spoken, but nearly monotone dialogue.
Honestly, don’t bother. If you’re reading in chronological order, skip this one.

Prelude to Foundation is a fun, adventurous book that is structurally more similar to “Robots” than to “Foundation.” Though it is not as essential Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation, it is a thoroughly enjoyable (if somewhat less cerebral) read, and a necessity for Asimov Completists. As for the reading, Scott Brick gives yet another excellent performance here. Any book narrated by Brick is guaranteed to be a joy to listen to.

MODERATE SPOILERS AHEAD ——————

Prelude to Foundation functions as connective tissue between the two series (Robots and Foundation) by carrying over the beloved R Daneel, and making him instrumental in the destiny of Harry Selden, but it has to do a lot of legwork to do so, and ultimately might function better were it not a foundation book. All that said, it does an admirable job not getting bogged down in continuity. Issues such as the lack of robots in the foundation series are left to mystery, rather than being the subject of a strenuous explainer. All in all, as long as you don’t mind the prequel flavor, go ahead and give it a listen. If you liked “Second Foundation” or “The Naked Sun”, You won’t be disappointed.

Where does Earth Awakens rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The entire First formic war series is absolutely incredible, and the performance of this novel is very well done, with Stephen Rudnicki as great as alway, but here's the big but. The recording wasn't well done. No matter what you use to listen to it, it has a harsh, tinny quality to it. I gave it 5 stars because it deserves 5 stars for story and performance, but it doesn't deserve it for sound quality.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Earth Awakens?

SPOILER-

The dying moments of captain Wit O'Toole.

Which scene was your favorite?

The drill sledges.
