Historia
New York, 1898. The only thing more shocking than Arthur Stanhope III’s unexpected death is the revelation that his will bestows his company—and most of the vast fortune that goes with it—to the nearest male heir, leaving his mother, wife, and daughter nearly impoverished. His widow, Sylvia, quickly realizes she must set aside her grief to ensure their daughter, Adelaide, is launched into society as soon as the appropriate mourning period passes.

Not as faith-based as some of the author's other books but still a good story.

Historia
For eighteen year old Lena O'Sullivan, life is predictable and dull. A future of hard work, marriage to a local boy, and a family of her own one day is all she has to look forward to. People from her background know not to expect too much, but Lena yearns for something different. Malachy Berger was different, for him, the world is at his feet. An only child of a wealthy, if peculiar father, a large inheritance, a beautiful house and a fine education are his due. Nobody is in favour of Lena and Malachy’s friendship, but why not? What harm are they doing? Why is everyone so dead set against it?

Violet Figg and her sister Trudy have lived a quiet life in Sugar Bend ever since a night forty years ago stole Trudy’s voice and cemented Violet’s role as Trudy’s fierce and loyal protector. Raised as an orphan by her aunt, Chariline has only been told a few pieces of her parents’ tragic love story. Her beautiful dark skin is proof that her father was Cushite, but she knows nothing else. While visiting her grandfather before his retirement as the Roman official in the queen’s court, Chariline overhears that her father is still alive, and discovering his identity becomes her obsession. I had not read books from this author but look forward to reading more. Some of female voices done by narrator were a little shrill and annoying but narrator sure made the transition from one voice to another very smooth.

My new favorite book!
Revisado: 07-13-21
I am so sad that the story is over! Getting a peek at the life and times of the post-Civil war South was an eye-opener. I was constantly frustrated by the way women were "supposed" to act and am thankful I have grown up in a different era. But our issues of faith (or lack of it) haven't changed! We still struggle with the "why" questions just as people have always done. And like the characters in the book, we continue to see God working His plan in these times.

Historia
As Nazi soldiers round up the Jews in their town, Róza and her five-year-old daughter, Shira, flee, seeking shelter in a neighbor’s barn. Hidden in the hayloft day and night, Shira struggles to stay still and quiet, as music pulses through her and the farmyard outside beckons. In this make-believe world, Róza can shield Shira from the horrors that surround them. But the day comes when their haven is no longer safe, and Róza must make an impossible choice: whether to keep Shira by her side or give her the chance to survive apart.

Interesting story but very slow moving
Revisado: 07-06-21
I have gained an interest in WWII stories and times. I thought this would be interesting but it moved so slowly that I couldn't wait for it to finally climax. The despair and sadness of those times was overwhelming and so the story left me feeling the same way.

Complex story not revealed until last 45 minutes!
Revisado: 01-28-20
Loved this story because I couldn't put it down. Similar names of many characters in the story made the story line a little difficult to follow if you're the kind of "reader" that listens once a week or less. However, it was intricately woven into a sad tale that left the reader relieved and anxious for the rest of the story.
