Historia
This 4th volume of the Marie Antoinette Romances begins several years after the close of "The Queen’s Necklace". It describes the events leading up to and including the storming of the Bastile. Past plots of Count Balsamo (aka, Cogliostro) to destroy the French monarchy are resurrected by the mysterious Dr. Gilbert - a student of Balsamo’s occult arts and the Enlightenment philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Considered by many critics to be a highlight of the Marie Antoinette Romances, Dumas tells this quintessential story of the French Revolution through the lens of the people.

Insufferable
Revisado: 05-19-24
Eager to listen to these last of the Marie Antoinette series , the first two , read by a different person, but this reading so terrible , so ham fisted and cringe worthy that I could not get beyond the first three chapters .i had hoped I could adapt to the corny reading style but unfortunately not . To bad Audible will not take exchanges as I’ve purchased both this and the final . Next time a more attentive preview listen is required.

Historia
Sharply observant and wickedly funny, E.F. Benson's six Mapp and Lucia novels satirize the upper-middle-class social climbers in 1920s and '30s rural England. Games of bridge and cups of tea fuel hilarious gossip and vindictive plots a-plenty. It is a masterfully sustained spotlight on the minutiae of village life - a clever and ultimately heartwarming series that seems tailor-made for audio. This second volume contains the second three books.

Revisado: 11-15-23
Always sad to finish the romp that is Benson’s work , a happy, welcome break from the dreary woes of our lackluster day. Instantly relatable , we all have a bit of Miss Mapp and dear Lucia in us - their foibles, nearly a century on, are our foibles , just more charming , more amusing and in spite of their triviality , enthralling.
Will listen once again , most likely next Autumn for their escapades seem best by fireside .

The ambivalence of being
Revisado: 03-22-23
After reading a few of the reviews below , all negative , I was taken aback , was I truly in the minority in feeling this a profound work ? Life is exactly as ambiguous as this sad tale unfolds , strength and weakness and flaw and virtue . I found myself entranced and admiring the three central characters; wishing to emulate certain virtues and reminded to avoid certain failings of character . Cather was an astonishing artist .

It was a fine enough anthology . In the wide world of letters I’d have expected a man of Sedaris’ accomplished wit to have selected something as exceptional as his work . It does not however mean it wasn’t a pleasure to hear these stories read aloud .

Quite a welcome escapist novel , a happy shift of perspective in identity, expectation and an informed play upon traditional folk legend, witchery, the liminal and romance.

Historia
Like most children, Penrod gets caught up in his own elaborate lies with hilarious results. His friends and his dog accompany him on his many jaunts, from the stage as "the Child Sir Lancelot", to the playground, to school. They make names for themselves as "bad boys" who, fittingly, always have the most fun. This humorous, thoughtful story is a wonderful example of the real-life characterization and attention to detail for which Tarkington is celebrated.

Revisado: 09-20-22
An excellent reading of a tale of great whimsy , humor and pathos ( Duke , the long suffering mutt quite heart wrenching) ; Tarkington, an author not as well known as in his day, captures boyhood in all its idyllic, ornery charm. In a coarse world we would benefit from a Tarkington revival .

Historia
Philip Carey, a sensitive orphan born with a clubfoot, finds himself in desperate need of passion and inspiration. He abandons his studies to travel, first to Heidelberg and then to Paris, where he nurses ambitions of becoming a great artist. Philip's youthful idealism erodes, however, as he comes face-to-face with his own mediocrity and lack of impact on the world. After returning to London to study medicine, he becomes wildly infatuated with Mildred, a vulgar, tawdry waitress, and begins a doomed love affair.

Perhaps the secret of life is hidden in this book
Revisado: 05-29-22
I do not know how this important book made itself present to me ; it simply popped up - perhaps my reading history , perhaps algorithm gods . Perhaps providence . But whatever , much needed, much appreciated. The author’s understanding of art and art makers is reason enough to read this book ; the character studies so keenly observed and expressed also warrant a read . But fundamentally it is the author’s struggle to glean existential meaning that is so relatable. I listen/read a great many classics , this one demands a thorough actual read , with pencil in hand to jot down its wisdom .

Historia
In this sardonic portrait of the up-and-coming middle class during the prosperous 1920s, Sinclair Lewis perfectly captures the sound, the feel, and the attitudes of the generation that created the cult of consumerism. With a sharp eye for detail and keen powers of observation, Lewis tracks successful realtor George Babbitt's daily struggles to rise to the top of his profession while maintaining his reputation as an upstanding family man.

I’ve meant to read Babbitt for years , decades , now having listened to this excellent reading of an incredible ( and incredibly funny ) observant work of art I must pick up an actual copy . Having recently moved to Chicago from LA, feeling a bit adrift , Lewis has helped me better understand and respect these good fellows (& gals) .

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Incredible narration , fantastic re-imagining
Revisado: 03-05-22
Having first enjoyed the authors ‘ interpretation of Hamlet , I was eager for this , a revision of my first and consistent favorite work of Shakespeare. Cummings an actor I know only superficially, is astonishing in this reading . Consistently I found myself forgetting that I was listening to only one voice - granted a voice of tremendous versatility.
A work I am sure to return to, perhaps as often as the original that inspired it .
