Historia
An earthquake in Masada, Israel, kills hundreds and reveals a tomb buried in the heart of the mountain. A trio of investigators - Sergeant Jordan Stone, a military forensic expert; Father Rhun Korza, a Vatican priest; and Dr. Erin Granger, a brilliant but disillusioned archaeologist - are sent to explore the macabre discovery, a subterranean temple holding the crucified body of a mummified girl. But a brutal attack at the site sets the three on the run, thrusting them into a race to recover what was once preserved in the tomb's sarcophagus: a book rumored to have been written by Christ's own hand....

Any additional comments?
I didn't really know what to expect from this, but I have enjoyed other James Rollins books. In all, it wasn't bad but if the series continued past the third book (as I read all three), I would not.
First, I should say that suspending disbelief is required for most James Rollins reading. It is absolute here for the entire Sanguines series.
Second, this is a warning to select readers: if you are offended by volumes of blood talk and imagery, then you will want to pass over this series. Read other Rollins' books instead. I don't know if a paragraph went by without some mention of blood. If you are deeply religious of most any faith, and you don't like new takes on Judeo-Christian biblical events, then you are better served not reading this series.
I've read varying reviews of Christian Baskous as the narrator but I find him to be pretty good. He has a challenge to voice a number of different accents (Hungarian among them) and genders so he does as well as can be expected.
On the whole, if you like Rollins AND fantasy novels, then you might enjoy this series. There is an adventurous historical romp to this and if you don't take it too seriously, it can be fun.

Historia
It's 1727. Tom Hawkins is damned if he's going to follow in his father's footsteps and become a country parson. Not for him a quiet life of prayer and propriety. His preference is for wine, women, and cards. But there's a sense of honor there too, and Tom won't pull family strings to get himself out of debt - not even when faced with the appalling horrors of London's notorious debtors' prison: The Marshalsea Gaol.

Really interesting view of prison life
Revisado: 04-03-15
Any additional comments?
The premise was a little light - the unrepentant gambler turns into a detective - but it turned out to be a really good book. Its always surprising to learn something about history from a novel and it was shocking to me that the prison was run more like a mall.

Made me dislike the former Pres
Revisado: 04-03-15
What disappointed you about Roosevelt's Beast?
Having listened to several Louis Bayard novels and even giving them some 5 ratings, this one is just awful. I'm actually surprised I kept listening. I may have gone in thinking this was more of a historical fiction novel but it ventured into sci-fi or fantasy... at least I think it did. I'm not sure if the whole thing was a malaria-induced dream.
Any additional comments?
Everything I had read about Teddy Roosevelt led me to believe he was a daring adventurer, a man's man. The voice given him by the narrator John Pruden made him sound like Ned Flanders. I got to where I didn't want him to speak at all but instead he could be long-winded. This helped to ruin this one for me.

Historia
Paris, 1938: As the shadow of war darkens Europe, democratic forces on the Continent struggle against fascism and communism, while in Spain the war has already begun. Alan Furst, whom Vince Flynn has called "the most talented espionage novelist of our generation", now gives us a taut, suspenseful, romantic, and richly rendered novel of spies and secret operatives in Paris and New York, in Warsaw and Odessa, on the eve of World War II.

I can't rave too much about this book but it was a worthwhile read. I thought the piecing together of the plot was a little loose.

Historia
Paris in 1895: Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish officer, has just been convicted of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment at Devil's Island, and stripped of his rank in front of a baying crowd of 20,000. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, the ambitious, intellectual, recently promoted head of the counterespionage agency that Dreyfus had passed secrets to the Germans. At first, Picquart firmly believes in Dreyfus' guilt. But it is not long after Dreyfus is delivered to his desolate prison that Picquart stumbles on information that leads him to suspect that there is still a spy at large in the French military.

The book was a little slow in places, but it was a pretty good read on the whole. The period and setting actually made me go and read the history of the Dreyfus Affair, after which I realized just how possible the book may have been.

David Liss is one of the best
Revisado: 04-03-15
Any additional comments?
I am a fan of historical novels on the whole but to me, David Liss is one of the best and has created a niche, filling it with interesting characters and surprisingly engaging plots. The coffee trade, the stock market and the inquisition could veer to boring but never do with Liss' characters. While Sebastian Foxx is an interesting lead, I did miss Benjamin Weaver.

Historia
When the body of a suicide victim disappears at West Point Military Academy in 1831, only to be discovered hours later missing its heart, the Academy calls on retired detective Gus Landor to investigate. Landor is something of a legend among his peers, noted for an uncanny, Holmesian ability to read people. When Edgar Allan Poe, a new cadet, comes forth with his own cryptic conclusion—that the man Landor is looking for is a poet—Landor is intrigued and enlists Poe as his assistant.

Chilling Novel, Beautifully Done
Revisado: 04-03-15
Any additional comments?
While I don't know much of Poe the actual man, I suspect that Bayard attributed far more positive attributes to him than he warranted. That did not take away from the book. The plot had you suspecting the ending, and yet you didn't know quite how it fit and then came the twist. The setting and the tautness of the tale make this a book that will keep you in the car a little longer to fit in another few pages of audio. The reader's performance was great, a voice I would like to hear more.

When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

What did you love best about All the Light We Cannot See?
I think I liked nearly everything about the book. The characters were beautifully written, and in such a way that you understood their fears and strengths. The setting was wonderfully crafted and the natural tension the time period lent to the story kept the audio pages turning.

Maxx Barry Disappoints with Syrup
Revisado: 04-03-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Perhaps because advertising is my profession, I may have had more issues with this book than the average reader. Marketing and Advertising are not the same thing. Getting around that for me made the book less appealing.
Any additional comments?
Maxx Barry typically has a fantastic sense of humor and a biting satirical view of consumerist and technology culture. Syrup had some of that but lacked some of the darker insights from his previous books. This was not Jennifer Government. I wasn't a fan of either of the lead characters and though I think the flimsy love story was a metaphor for "marketing" I still found it pointless to the story. With most of Maxx Barry's work you have to suspend disbelief but in doing so, you kind of want it to go even further out there to make that worthwhile.
