Essential reading material

Loved the juxtaposing, yet like-angled narration. Also, the use of symbolism. Hard subject matter, but well told!

Historia
Here is the first full-length biography of a much maligned but astonishingly colourful Queen of England. In Newgate Street, in the city of London, stand the meagre ruins of Christ Church. On the same site once stood a royal mausoleum set to rival Westminster Abbey in the 14th century. Among the many crowned heads buried there was Isabella of France, Edward II's queen - one of the most notorious femme fatales in history. But how did she acquire her evil reputation? And is it justified?

Made me think
Revisado: 03-10-14
This story blossoms a thought process around several global issues while offering very little plot and no closure. The writing is so excellent that I still give it 4 stars.

Whispers and dark memories of witch trials and the women burned at the stake just seventy years earlier still haunt the streets of Schongau.

Poor Translation, IMO
Revisado: 03-10-14
The story is compelling, mysterious & even a bit terrifying. However, I cannot help but feel lost in translation. The character building concerning "the hangman" was great, but not so great concerning the other characters.

Historia
Here is the tragic, stormy life of Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon. Her story is a chronicle of courage and faith, betrayal and treachery - set amidst the splendor, pageantry, squalor, and intrigue of 16th-century Europe. The history of Mary Tudor is an improbable blend of triumph, humiliation, heartbreak, and devotion - and Ms. Erickson recounts it all against the turbulent background of European politics, war, and religious strife of the mid-1500s.

Historia
Mika Brzezinski is at war against obesity. She believes the fearsome subjects of food, diet, and body image are "radioactive" in America, and getting worse. On Morning Joe, she is often so adamant about improving America’s eating habits that some people have dubbed her "the food Nazi". What they don’t know is that Mika wages a personal fight against food every day, and in Obsessed, she describes her history of food obsession, distorted body image, and her struggle to be thin. She believes it is time we stop blaming and shaming ourselves and look at the real culprits - the food we eat and our addiction to it.
