Historia
In the first decades of the 21st century, the world is convulsing, its governments mired in gridlock while a patient but unrelenting ecological crisis looms. America is in upheaval, battered by violent weather and extreme politics. In California in 2013, Tony Pietrus, a scientist studying deposits of undersea methane, receives a death threat.

A dark and prescient glimpse of a frightful future
Revisado: 04-12-23
I found this book through an interview on the VOLTS podcast and was intrigued by the idea of a book about the global climate future written by an author who understands the scientific, social and political realities of our complicated world.
What I found was a complex tapestry of stories spanning a myriad of lives across the spectrum of class based in a very rich depiction of present to near future America. A frustratingly realistic depiction of the reluctance of politicians, plutocrats and the general populace to grasp the realities of climate change. Fearful predictions of the future hyper surveillance police state. And surprisingly beneath all the dispare a story of human grit and resilience. A message of hope for a future as of yet unwritten.
It is not an easy read but it is a worthy one.

Historia
The world’s leading economist of inequality presents a short but sweeping and surprisingly optimistic history of human progress toward equality despite crises, disasters, and backsliding, a perfect introduction to the ideas developed in his monumental earlier books.

Required reading for a more equitable future
Revisado: 06-29-22
I first heard the author on The Ezra Cline show and was fascinated by his presentation of the concept of a national inheritance. His exposition of an alternative socioeconomic framework for the future is riveting. Well written, sourced and illuminated this truly is a book I wish everyone could read.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

Some good points, but not a great book

The importance of rational skepticism.

An amazing read, I wasn't sure what to expect coming in and found myself pleasantly surprised. although there is a rather large chunk of the book devoted to UFO'S the message of Sagan comes through very clear. And the narration brings energy to the book that could have just as easily become monotonous.
