Historia
A monumental figure on the American landscape, Jerry Lee Lewis spent his childhood raising hell in Ferriday, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi; galvanized the world with hit records like "Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On" and "Great Balls of Fire", that gave rock and roll its devil’s edge; caused riots and boycotts with his incendiary performances; nearly scuttled his career by marrying his 13-year-old second cousin - his third wife of seven - and ran a decades-long marathon of drugs, drinking, and women.

Excellent unbiased biography
Revisado: 09-03-19
A false bloom is an interesting way to surmise this man's life. It had to be very difficult to write this without expressing opinion. When listening I couldn't say how many times I thought what an idiot this person was and is and how much his ego outweighed his talent. The fact he compares himself to Elvis is laughable, Elvis had a heart, a conscience. Rick Bragg is in my opinion one of the most talented story tellers of our lifetime and if it were not for his writing of this I would not have ever bought it. The narration is good but after hearing the author narrate other works, I'm spoiled. In 50 years from now everyone will know who Elvis was, only some will know who JLL was and even then will be known for how he wasted his talent, his life and caused harm to nearly everyone he ever knew. Perhaps one day before he dies he will come to understand what he threw away and what legacy he left but I doubt it as intelligence is not in his library of traits.

Historia
Everyone has secrets, and Rachel Holloway is no exception. She’s worked hard to keep the past where it belongs: dead and buried. And so far, she’s been very successful. But now the small newspaper where she works wants to produce a podcast on a cold case: the disappearance 12 years ago of young Molly Forster. Some secrets should never see the light of day, and, as far as Rachel is concerned, whatever happened to little Molly is one of them.

good writing, narration not so much
Revisado: 08-23-19
a little excessively long but okay, but the narration was difficult to listen to. Still worth it if it's on sale. The short version they all got out but the rescue was convoluted, involved, political and unnerving. one diver died but all the boys got out. I'd suggest the print version instead.

"Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned"...So say the publishers about this audiobook I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii, and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold.

used to respect willie. not anymore.
Revisado: 08-06-19
struggled to finish. I guess Willie thinks outlaw mentality and total disregard for the law is good. Newsflash it's not. Used to feel bad the IRS got him, not after listening to this. He flaunts and brags about evading the laws and doing people wrong. In parts it simply made me sick and had to stop listening. I'm sure he has more redeeming qualities than singing but after this I will never know.

Historia
We humans like to think of ourselves as highly evolved creatures. But if we are supposedly evolution's greatest creation, why do we have such bad knees? Why do we catch head colds so often - 200 times more often than a dog does? How come our wrists have so many useless bones? And are we really supposed to swallow and breathe through the same narrow tube? Surely there's been some kind of mistake. As professor of biology Nathan H. Lents explains in Human Errors, our evolutionary history is nothing if not a litany of mistakes, each more entertaining and enlightening than the last.

Somewhat difficult to listen to
Revisado: 06-26-19
It felt like it was going in circles with not much focus and then began discussing aliens at the very last until I wasn't really sure what I was listening to. The narrator did as good a job as possible, it needed serious editing to keep it from diverging way off topic.

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Narrator does a perfect job of performing the story of how our food gets to us and just what our food is and what's changed in a short period of time. This wasn't anything I wasn't already aware of but it was excellently brought together and told.

Historia
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

Too detailed
Revisado: 03-24-19
too many details turned this very interesting story into a chore to listen to. The smallest detail like when and exactly how the person went to the bathroom really took the polish off an otherwise good story. Would have been much more enjoyable had it been a wee less descriptive. It's hard to engage with since not even the most minute detail is left to imagination.

Historia
In medical charts, the term "N.A.D." (No Apparent Distress) is used for patients who appear stable. The phrase also aptly describes America's medical system when it comes to treating the underprivileged. Medical students learn on the bodies of the poor - and the poor suffer from their mistakes. Rachel Pearson confronted these harsh realities when she started medical school in Galveston, Texas.

Well told tale of broken system
Revisado: 09-30-18
Having gotten this on sale I wasn't sure what to expect. Very well written and well narrated. Getting good medical care at a fair price is no longer possible in this country even for those who can afford it. Big business has caused harm to people which is the first oath taken by a doctor (do no harm). With few exceptions hospitals are interested only in money not fair care of a patient. I already knew this before reading but this tale will nearly bring tears as the wrongs are so described.

Although the intricate details of this was over my head and is best suited for one devoted to the business of trains, parts were repeated and at times the story suffered from continuity. I would have given the story a better rating had it had a better proofreader editor, the performance was flawless so that helped pull the rating up.
