Better Than the First Book!
Revisado: 07-10-21
OVERALL: The fun continues with this second volume. The plot lines are fleshed out and the characters are coming into their own.
PERFORMANCE: Jay Adler did his best but some of his female characters conjured images of women with five o'clock shadow and Old Spice. Still, that wasn't enough to put me off from enjoying the book.
RECOMMENDATION: If you liked the first one then you will definitely like the second one.

Historia
A normal, if not rebellious, human, Cameron Dupree has spent the last three years finding his way through a school of the rich and powerful...literally. He's surrounded by the supernatural cream of the crop: children of alpha werewolves, banshees with ties to the United Nations, a faerie princess from another realm of reality, and a teenage succubus who might be the scariest, and sexiest, of them all. Everything is going as great as can be for a vanilla human...until one misstep lands him in trouble with a noble of the Unseelie Fae.

Supernatural First World Problems
Revisado: 07-10-21
OVERALL: Unlike the usual rags to prominence underdog trope, this story begins in a high school for the spawn of the uber elite. I had my doubts at the beginning however. Despite this I percevered and the tale picked up steam quickly as the plot line developed. Not your average cliche adolescent's harem bang fest. This is a good story that happens to have harem elements to it. The writing is very good and will keep me coming back for more.
PERFORMANCE: Brandon Utah did a fine job overall with the narration. That being said the book could of benefited with female voice actor. Some of the female characters came across like a manly construction worker on Friday night trying to sound like a woman while flirting with someone at a drag queen bar. A bit too baritone for my taste.
RECOMMENDATION: While not quite at the level of my absolute favorites (5 stars) this is still a solid listen. Overall this book is a nice introduction to what promises to be a fun series.

Entertaining but Ultimately Pointless
Revisado: 12-10-20
The 4.8 rating when I acquired this book was misleading. While the story was a nice and entertaining listen it ultimately lacked substance. Far too much of the book was devoted to inconsequential details such as which routes they took to get somewhere and how they prepared each meal. This seemed to be filler material. Much like what someone would use when trying to flesh out a 500 word essay. I feel like the book could of been halved or more by eliminating the superfluous narration. The story lacked focus and direction. The third primary catgirl to join the story line was just annoying to listen to. Nonetheless the story flowed and helped me pass the time while I waited for my favorite authors to release their next books.

Historia
Cormac’s life used to be about racing hover cycles and partying on orbital stations. Fighting Syndicate sponsored assassins, uncovering ancient alien technology, and hiding his identity from Luna’s authorities are rather recent additions to his list of priorities. He’s not alone, but that doesn’t make his life any simpler. Kiera, the exotic Earth maiden more versed in shooting a bow on horseback than riding in the passenger seat of a speeder. Mal, his childhood friend turned famous linestream actress. Nova, the cyborg killer who knows far more than she’s letting on.

Could of Been Better
Revisado: 11-30-20
The other negative reviews did a good job highlighting the problems with this book. The main character is portrayed as the family underachiever and isn't very likable. An example of which was his propensity to sleep around without the regard of the other women in his life.
SPOILER ALERT! The ending ruined it for me. I completely lost any hope of a suspension of disbelief when a character from a comparatively primitive society who had singular word communication skills was nonetheless able to operate a high tech piece of equipment with no prior training. That part struck me as sloppy writing. The background settings and descriptions were written well enough though. Nothing wrong with the performance.

Even In Literature Vegans Can Be Annoying
Revisado: 11-30-20
As prior reviews pointed out, the story starts out well enough with an interesting premise. From there the story meandered a bit too much. It oscillated from extolling the virtues of veganism and how great it can taste to chasing after an annoying character named Brixton. Honestly, you would think that a main character with so much world experience would of been better at handling someone like that. Yet for all of that the story was easy to follow and made for decent light listening. Recommended as an in between book. For when you are waiting for one of your favorite authors to finish their next book.

A Good Story / Difficult Listen
Revisado: 11-13-20
Overall the story was interesting and proceeded at a good pace. I would rate it between a 4.5 or 4.6. As other reviews pointed out the author has a propensity to wax into loquaciousness. The exception being when acts of intimacy are being described. In those instances he uses that same three words over and over again. Namely those words that describe everyone's favorite naughty bits and the inevitable culmination of intimate union that bringing those bits together results in.
The performer's voice was pleasant. Too pleasant really. Numerous times I found that my mind had drifted and I missed whole sections of dialog. Perhaps it was the cadence of his speech that lulled me again and again away from the story and into my own inner monolog? Regardless of the exact reason, I would repeatedly have to back up the story to the last thing I clearly remembered hearing. Also the narrator had the interesting ability to somehow keep the passion out of those times where he was actually trying to express passion. That being said he did an excellent job on the various character voices. Especially the female ones. That is a rare talent for male voice actors. Despite my criticisms I will listen to the next book. After all, as the other reviews pointed out, he really did end the book with a frustrating cliffhanger.

I Kept LIstening Hoping It Would Get Better
Revisado: 11-05-20
Many of the other poor reviews hit the salient points:
The origin story was cringy.
The MC was narcissistic and obnoxious.
The story was a meandering miasma of random adventures with little to no point.
The harem ladies and their interactions with the MC were forgettable.
The writing had some imaginative parts to it but it wasn't enough save the overall story.
The story finally started to become interesting by the end of the book. However do not be fooled. The second book is just more of the same.

If Only I Had Known...
Revisado: 11-05-20
This was such a wonderful start to a great series! It could easily of been one of Fantasies' great works of renown. Unfortunately the author had taken ill after the first book with a "serious illness." There is no telling if or when he will finish the series. Honestly the book deserves five stars in every category. However as it stands now it is an unfilled promise of something wonderful. Thus my overall rating of just one star. It will ultimately leave you disappointed and forever wanting more.

Formulaic and Predictable
Revisado: 09-08-20
The premise of the story and decent ratings at the time were the reasons I gave this one a try. Unfortunately the rest of the story followed the typical overpowered main character (MC) in a haram setting storyline. I found that the MC was too full of himself and that made him obnoxious. The MC's repetitive self descriptions of his great physique were unnecessary and tedious. The introduction of the over the top super hot anime girl partway in the story just ruined any possibility of the suspension of disbelief. Finally the plot ended up being rather predictable. Still, to each their own. I hope your experience was better than mine.

Hope For a Post Apocolypse World
Revisado: 09-01-20
First person narratives are the crutch upon which weak authors often rely. At least that is my opinion on the matter. That being said a really good author can use a first person narrative to take you on an engaging adventure with the main character (MC.) That is something M. R. Carey did with great success! From the beginning you weren't just hearing about it, you were there with the MC, Koli. Going through what he experienced and discovering the greater world as he did. This is the beginning of a series. As such certain events had to be set in motion for the MC to be set on this journey. The unfortunate side effect of that is that it made certain subplot outcomes predictable. Thus the four instead of five star rating on the story. Nevertheless the author did an excellent job making the journey to these story benchmarks quite engaging. Enough that the overall experience was worth a full five stars. Unlike M. R. Carey's previous work, The Girl With All The Gifts, this story suggest some hope for a post apocalypse world. It is by no means guaranteed. Just enough of a tease to hook you into wanting to continue the story.
The narration by Theo Soloman did an excellent job selling this story to the listener. That pretty much says it all on that front.
