Gender studies
Revisado: 03-28-25
Gender studies gender studies braindead politicians gender studies gender studies fat nerds gender studies chuck norris gender studies. There. You're caught up on all the jokes in the first hour. That's how jokes work in this book; you just say 'Thing' plus 'good' or 'bad'- or just say Thing without further comment- and that's the joke. There's no digging into a topic or deconstructing why it's silly or ironic, no wry sarcastic musings about the human condition like you might find in classics like Diskworld, just: Thing. I said Thing, You know Thing right. Thing. Laugh now please.
The writing's also weak; picture Mary Sue in a schizo 8th grader fanfic level. I returned it.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

B roll. Lots of sighing
Revisado: 03-19-25
I put this book off for 5 years because it sounded mid, and I was right. The main characters sigh constantly in this book and just sound exhausted, and I think that sums it up. Some of the other reviews called it B roll, and that's pretty accurate. The author seems to be dead set on railroading his universe into a dystopia with constant bickering and sh*ttiness, instead of giving them grand threats to face again. It's wannabe game of thones.
Like why on earth is money still such a big deal with star trek replicators everywhere? "Oh we can't print more printers because that'll cause inflation, ask any 20th century economist." Whut, inflation is from having more money than goods; printer time can't lose value because it IS value. And AI isn't THAT hard, we have better AI today. Stupid railroading like that, plus infighting and a crapload of riding river boats for some reason- all of which amounts to nothing. 70% of the book could have been avoided by just having 1 conversation right at the start, instead of dicking around for months then getting caught anyway. Ugh. It's pretty exhausting/boring.
The setting is grand. The story is not.

Historia
Done with everything, this not-so-frozen-hearted lich queen is out for one final rampage, and this time, the prize is the soul of the world. Do or die. Again. The stakes are high, the board is set. More than just Maud's crafting stash is on the line. She has a fabulous skirt, bombs in her bloomers, undead minions in the millions, and an unshakable urge to murder anyone who gets in her way. If the Whisperer's brain wasn't getting eaten by parasites he'd probably be terrified.

Doesn't fumble the ending
Revisado: 03-11-25
This has been an enjoyable series. The ending was satisfying and tied up all the loose ends, no BS or cliffhangers. And it was so, so nice to see a DnD esq story that actually went somewhere and left the world a better place. I've never seen a character make it so far before, except maybe Goku. Maud's certainly come a long way from the weak, generic sociopath litch of the first book.

The first 10 hours are miserable
Revisado: 01-06-25
You really might want to skip the first 10 hours. It's just all the good guys repeatedly getting their teeth kicked in over and over, Their family tree getting heavily pruned. It took me months to get through. The last few hours it finally turns around and gets really satisfying. *Almost* made it all worthwhile...

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, the galaxy was populated by a great variety of beings. But one species - eons beyond all others in both technology and knowledge - achieved dominance. They ruled in peace but met opposition with quick and brutal effectiveness. They were the Forerunners - the keepers of the Mantle of Responsibility, the next stage of life in the Universe’s Living Time. And then they vanished. This is their story.

Just read the wiki
Revisado: 05-20-24
I think it's appropriate that I was listening to this while jogging in circles doing nothing, since that sums up the first 7 hours. It's just a tedious, overly descriptive road trip looking at ancient history, with lots of "I can't tell you that yet" to space out the lore. I particularly liked how they wasted a half hour describing their new battle ship, only for it to be disassembled immediately. Checkov's gun has been subverted ig?
The main characters do nothing but walk, talk and bemoan their situation. Just read the wiki

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Interesting world building
Revisado: 05-07-24
Gets a little dry at times but I appreciated all the thought put into the kaiju, the alien world and the science around them. The story was good too, pulpy comedic hero stuff with a satisfying ending.
My one big complaint: Nuclear reactors Do Not explode. They Can Not explode. Doesn't matter if all the safety features fail, they're not going up unless someone lined the core with high explosives. Reactors melt. That's why it's called a meltdown. (Yes I know the writer just wanted a bunch of big explosions, but there's enough groundless fear of nuclear power out there already thanks.)

Historia
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Interesting setup goes largely unused
Revisado: 05-07-24
So you're left with a generic fantasy story, basically someone's DnD campaign with some mild novelties. It looks like the "fantasy world and real worlds are connected" premise never really gets explored in the next 4 books either, so I'd say steer clear.

Why do I keep trying LitRPG audiobooks...
Revisado: 03-08-24
My second time with a LitRPG. Still bad. Still huge chunks of a somewhat slow robot voice reading out stats windows, right before the protagonist summarizes the salient parts anyway. Ugh. And why do all LitRPGs assume you've never played a video game and explain everything in excruciating detail? Including the dungeon crawling. Also the story seems generic, one-dimensional *ssholes mistreat you so you better start stacking up bodies. I bailed after 4-5 hours- Less than the length of one dungeon crawl.
Just find a D&D comedy podcast like Dungeons and Doritos or Acquisitions Incorporated. This ain't it man.

Skip the first 5 hours
Revisado: 03-08-24
The first 5 stories are trash. Nothing to do with the 3 laws of robotics. Instead we get such challenging sci fi brain teasers such as "what if your robot gets insta hammered drunk around danger and stops following orders? What if it forms cults? What if it goes unresponsive and starts goose stepping like a n*zi when under too much pressure?" Wow such insight, much speculative fiction wow.
The last few chapters are where the laws of robotics start getting hairy. Where things start getting complicated and interesting. And the ending, the very last minute of the book, well. It's VERY different from the ending of the Will Smith movie. And better, imo. I can see why the book lovers were so offended. Just, skip the garbage and start with "6. Little Lost Robot".

22 hours wasted
Revisado: 02-23-24
What was the point of all that? I was going to give it 3 stars, since while the story was incredibly meandering and nothing but endless tangents and side stories, some of the tangents were kinda interesting or nostalgic. Even with the frustrating 13 hour blue balling getting to the premise. But then the ending just randomly took a big dump on the whole goal of the book.
So what was the point of all those bodies? All those random side characters? Her random super-power? His idea to end poorness and need? His random decision at the end? I guess there was no reason for any of it. The author just wanted to waste my time. I wish I could give this negative stars.
