As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Incredible portrait of Douglass’ life and majestic reading by Onayemi. What more American a story than Douglass? His life is tragedy, joy, and still unresolved today as slavery evolved, not disappeared. We still must live up to Douglass.

When George Washington was elected president, he reluctantly left behind his beloved Mount Vernon to serve in Philadelphia, the temporary seat of the nation's capital. In setting up his household, he took Tobias Lear, his celebrated secretary, and eight slaves, including Ona Judge, about which little has been written. As he grew accustomed to Northern ways, there was one change he couldn't get his arms around: Pennsylvania law required enslaved people be set free after six months of residency in the state. Washington decided to circumvent the law.

Fantastic book! Brings you into the world of Ona Judge, the free and enslaved black communities, and the enslavers — George and Martha Washington. Dunbar brings out the politics of the day and clearly illustrates the lengths the Washingtons went to to maintain slavery as abolitionist voices increased. More than anything, this book brings the courageous story of Ona Judge to the foreground. Like good books of history, Dunbar helps you understand the time period better. Highly recommend.

OKC’s Past & Present Weaved Together

From land runs to Civil Rights, tornadoes to Wayne Coyne, urban boomtown to urban renewal and sprawl and gentrification to urban revitalization, Anderson beautifully weaves together OKC’s past and present. My biggest critique is what is not included — women beyond the heroic Clara Luper, Indigenous Peoples and nations, Mexican-American and Asian-American citizens. Also, he takes a few too many shots at the loyal Thunderman — Russell Westbrook. The history and stories Anderson includes are well-told. This is not a romanticized tale. OKC’s successes and shortcomings are presented. He uses vivid metaphors to weave stories together. I highly recommend this book. For those that see OKC as a flyover city, you’ll be surprised. For OKC natives, transplants, and expats, you’ll see Anderson captures much of their city in ways we knew, but hadn’t put altogether in one place. Well done, Mr. Anderson.
